Modern Science and Arts University Fiber Optics Sheet 4: Eng.M.S.Zaky

The document discusses graded index optical fibers and includes 4 problems: 1) calculating the index at a point in a graded index fiber, 2) determining the number of modes in a graded index fiber, 3) evaluating the bit rate x distance product for a graded index fiber operating at 1.3 um, and 4) calculating the maximum length of a single-mode fiber operating at 1.3 um before a repeater is needed to regenerate the signal.

Fiber Optics
Sheet 4
1- A graded index fiber has n1=1.5, n2=1.45. Find the index at a
point where r=a/2 and p=2.
2- A graded index fiber has n1=1.41, n2=1.4 at
wavelength=820nm and core diameter=50um. Calculate the
number of modes, given p=2.
3- Consider a graded index fiber whose core has a diameter of
50um and a refractive index of n1=1.48. The cladding has n2=
1.46. If this fiber is used at 1.30 um with a laser diode that has a
very narrow linewidth, what will the bit rate x distance product
be? Evaluate the BL product if this were a multimode step index
fiber.
4- The optical power launched into a single-mode optical fiber from
a laser diode is approx.. 1mW. The photodetector at the output
requires a minimum power of 10nW to provide a clear signal
(above noise). The fiber operates at 1.3um and has an
attenuation coefficient of 0.4db/km. What is the maximum length
of fiber that can be used without inserting a repeater (to
regenerate the signal)?
