Juneteenth

What is Juneteenth?
Juneteenth is the oldest celebration of the end of slavery in the United States. Started on
June 19th, 1865 under Order Number 3 of Major General Gordon Granger. The Major General
Landed in Galveston, Texas approximately two and a half years after the Emancipation
Proclamation by Republican President Abraham Lincoln.

How is Juneteenth celebrated?


Juneteenth celebrations highlight the rich history and traditions of this date. Celebrations
include events like Rodeos, Talent Shows, Baseball, Barbecuing and many more designed to
entertain all the people who decide to participate in the festivities. However, Juneteenth always
features an educational component. This educational component to the holiday illustrates the
challenges that the African American community has faced and continues to face in its efforts
to gain equality.

Why is Juneteenth important to the Republican Party?


The original Republican Party was founded by anti-slavery activists and members of the
Whig party in 1854. As the preamble of the platform of the Republican Party states, The
American Dream is a dream of equal opportunity for all. And the Republican Party is the party of
opportunity.1 Beginning with Republican President Abraham Lincolns fight to end slavery and
restore constitutional rights to all Americans the Republican Party has looked out for the rights
and privileges of all Americans. The Republican Party has always been true to its principles of
making sure that the values of life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness remain entrenched within
American society and is extended to all Americans regardless of color, sex, nationality, or any
factor. Juneteenth is important to the Republican Party as it is symbolic of the start of the partys
success in upholding its American ideals.

Why is Juneteenth important to the Harris County GOP?


The Harris County GOP is following in the footsteps of the Republican Party and
upholding the Republican values of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Juneteenth is very
important for the Republican Party, not only to celebrate the ascension of equality in America
but also to be able to reach out to the people that Harris County GOP serves. To interact with
them, listen to their problems and be the party that best looks out for the interests and need of its
electorate. Juneteenth is important to the Harris County GOP because it gives us the opportunity
to work with the people and make their lives better.
