Assignment 6 1. at 25: C H H C H

The document is an assignment for a chemical engineering thermodynamics course. It contains 3 problems: 1) Determine the Gibbs energy of formation for hydrogen peroxide at 298K using a given value at 25C and 1 atm. 2) Calculate the Gibbs energy of formation of NH3 at 1000K. 3) Calculate the ratio of butane to 1-butene at equilibrium for a hydrogenation reaction at 1000K and 5 bar, given a feed ratio and assumptions of ideal gas behavior and constant enthalpy of reaction.

ECH3108 CHEMICAL ENGINEERING THERMODYNAMICS

SEM 1 2015/2016
Assignment 6
1. At 25oC and 1 atm, the Gibbs energy of reaction to produce liquid hydrogen peroxide from
water (liquid phase) has been measured to be 116.8 kJ/mol. From this value, determine the
Gibbs energy of formation for hydrogen peroxide at 298K.
2. Calculate the Gibbs energy of formation of NH3 at 1000K. Remember that the Gibbs energy of
formation of the elements are still zero at this temperature.
3. Consider the hydrogenation reaction of 1-butene to butane by the following reaction:

C4 H8 H 2 C4 H10
The feed flow ratio is 10 moles H2: mole C4H8. Consider a reactor temperature of 1000k and
reactor pressure of 5 bar. Calculate the ratio of butane:1-butene at equilibrium. You may assume
ideal gas behaviour and that enthalpy of reaction is constant for the reaction.
