Old Style

Transitional

Formal, proper tone. Beautiful, but hardworking. Financial reports, legal documents,
bank letterhead, higher education

Similar to Old Style, but with its shirt untucked.

Still a bit proper, but can be a bit more casual.

Garamond, Caslon, Goudy Old Style,

Bembo, Minion, Arno

Baskerville, Century

Modern

Slab

Fashionable, outgoing, a bit over-the-top.

Works better as display when you want things
to be stylish.

Aw, shucks attitude. Friendly and bold, but not

cocky and rude.

Bodoni, Didot

Clarendon, Rockwell, New Century

Geometric

Humanist

Made mostly of cirlces and square, and tend

to have a hard, sharp, precise look.

Softer, friednlier shapes. More style than

geometrics with a bit more flourish.

Futura, Avenir, Avant Garde, Kabel

Meta, Fruitiger, Museo, Optima, Univers

When pairing, find two contrasting typefaces:

one legible for body, and one with style for
headlines is a good start.

Avoid using fonts that come installed (Times,

Arial, Verdana, Georgia, Century Gothic,
Etc.) They make it seem like you dont care
and all have good alternatives.
