MCR3U - Unit 7: Discrete Functions: Sequences and Series Date:
7.1 &7.5 Arithmetic Sequences and Series
Homework: Pages 424-425: # 6, 8{a,c,f), 10, 13(ce,0}, 15
; Pages 452-453: # S{b,djf), 6(a.cd.), 8, 9, 13, 15, 16
Learning Objectives/Success Criteria: At the end of this lesson I will be able to:
* Use the following terminology: sequence, term, arithmetic sequence, common difference, general term,
recursive function, arithmetic series, partial sum
* Define an arithmetic sequence by its general term, recursively and by a discrete linear function
* Calculate the sum of the first n terms of a arithmetic sequence
iscrete Functions: are only defined for a set of numbers that can be listed, such as whole numbers or the set
of integers. ‘These include factorial functions, permutations & combination functions (which you will see if you
take Data Management) and recursive functions (this chapter).
Sequences: an ordered list of numbers
Whats the next number in the sequence?

Recursive Functions: are functions that relate the general term of a series or sequence to the previous term,
‘There are two types of recursive functions we will be looking at:
+ Arithmetic Sequence and Series (7.1 &7.5)
+ Geometric Sequences and Series (7.2 & 7.6)
ArithmeticSequences: an cequenice that has He Same

What is the 33" term of the sequence 18, 11, 4, 03, ..?
Determine the number of terms in the sequence: 42, 29, 16, ..-673
Ina arithmetic sequence, the 11" term is 53, and the sum of the 5t and 7 term is $6, Find the
sequence.
‘The 7% term of an arithmetic sequence is 53 and the 11° term is 97. Determine the 100* term.
