Changing The Subject of The Formula

1) The document discusses changing the subject of a formula by transposing terms, squaring/taking square roots, and expressing one variable in terms of others and operators. 2) It provides examples of changing the subject of formulas to different variables, such as making t the subject of C = 1 – t^2, making n the subject of L = a + (n -1) d, and making I the subject of T = 2πI. 3) Additional examples include making x the subject of 2ax + 3b^2 = 2bx + 3a^2, finding x in terms of y for the formula y = 2x – 1, and making R the subject of the formula

Topic: CHANGING THE SUBJECT OF THE FORMULA

A formula is a relation among two or more variables and is written in the form of an equation.
The change of the subject is the concept of expressing one variable in terms of,
1) another various operators on terms
2) transposing the terms
3) squaring or taking square roots etc.
Ex ( 1)
Change the subject of each of the following to the letter given against them.
1) C = 1 t2 ; make `t` the subject.
1 + t2
2) L = a + (n -1) d ; make `n` the subject.
3) T = 2 I ; make `I` the subject.
MH
4) 2ax + 3b2 = 2bx + 3a2 ; make `x` the subject
Ex (2)
1) If y = 2x 1, find x in terms of y . Also find x when y = 1.
x+3
2) Make V the subject of the formula 1 = 1 + 1 , Find the value of `v` when u = 14 ,
f = 6.
f
u
v
3) In the formula A = P ( 1 + RT ) , make R the subject , hence find R when A = 400 , P =
300 , T = 2 .
100
4) 2A + 3B = 3A B , express A in terms of B and C . Find the value of A when C = -2 and B
= 1.
2C
5) If the total cost (T) of a number of items (n) is given , find a formula for the cost per item
(c) What is the value of `c` when T is Rs.52.50 and n is 35.
6) The number x is increased by C% of itself and the number y is decreased by C% of itself . If
the results are equal , express C in terms of x and y . Hence find C when y = 3x.
7) Make C the subject of formula S = ( 1 r ) ( 1 R ) C . If r = 10 , R = 5 and S = 200 ,
find C.

8) The arithmetic mean A of the five quantities p,q,r,s,t is equal to their sum divided by the
number of quantities.
i)
Rewrite it as a formula .
ii)
Make (p +q ) as the subject of the formula.
iii) If A = 20 , r +s + t = 60 ,find (p +q) .
9) The distance , s metres which a falling body covers in terms of t seconds , is 4.8 times the
square of the time t .

i)
ii)

Rewrite the above information as an equation in s and t .

A stone which is dropped from a cliff top takes 3.5 seconds to reach the base of the
cliff. Use your answer to part (i) of this question to calculate the height of the cliff to
the nearest metre.

10) The volume V cm3 of a hollow cylindrical pipe of length cm , outer radius `R` cm and
inner radius `r` cm is given by the formula V = ( R2 r2) .
i)
Make r the subject of the formula
ii)
Find r if V = 22, R = 2 , = 4 and = 3 1

11) If x = -b + b2 4ac ; make `c ` as the subject of the formula.
2a
Also find c if a= 4 and b= 5, x = 1
