SUPPLEMENTARY QUESTIONS - TRANSMISSION

1. (2007/2008/3 Main Q3)

A planetary gear train is shown in figure. The carrier (link 2) serves as the input to
the train. The sun (gear 1) is fixed and has 16 teeth and the planet gear (gear 3) has
32 teeth. The ring (gear 4) serves as the output from the train and has 80 teeth.
Determine the rotational velocity of all members of this gear train when the input
shaft rotates at 1800 rpm clockwise.
(Ans: sun = 0 rpm, planet = 2700 rpm CW, ring = 2160 rpm CW)

2. (2009/2010/1 Main Q5)

Figure below shows an epicyclic gear train. The carrier (link 1) is driven by an
electric motor rated at 3600 rpm, clockwise. The sun (gear 2) is fixed and has 12
teeth. The sun meshes with three planet gears (gear 3, gear 4 and gear 5) of equal
size. The planet gears are spaced at an angular distance of 120 between each other
and have 18 teeth each. The ring (gear 6) serves as the output from the train. All the
gears have the same module.

Determine the number of teeth of the ring (gear 6),

Determine the rotational velocity of all members of this gear train.
(Ans: N6 = 48; 1 = 3600 rpm CW, 2 = 0, 3 = 4 = 5 = 6000 rpm CW, 6
= 4500 rpm CW)

3. (2010/2011/1 Main Q4a)

Figure below shows the top view of a gear train which is consists of a pair of miter
bevel gears (Gear 1 and 2) and three spur gears (Gear 3, 4 and 5). The gears have
the following number of teeth: N1 = 30 teeth, N3 = 40 teeth, N4 = 45 teeth and
N5 = 60 teeth. Gear 3 has a module of 10 mm.
