Algebra/Geometry Survey 2 Name: - Period: - Date

This document provides instructions for graphing a line using a table of values. It explains that to graph a line, you first need to set up a table with x-values in one column and the corresponding y-values in the other. The y-values are calculated by plugging the x-values into the line's equation. Two examples are provided, one with the equation in y= form and one that must first be rearranged to solve for y. Students are then asked to complete tables and graphs for several practice problems.

Algebra/Geometry Survey 2
Graphing a Line Using a Table of Values

Name: __________________________
Period: _____
Date: __________

Weve been working on relating points (x, y), tables, equations and rules. Now lets work on
putting this all together to graph a line.
Example 1: Graph y = 3x + 2
Step 1: Set up a table of values.
Step 2: Choose several values of x (4 or 5 values should do).
Step 3: Plug each x value into the equation and find the corresponding y value.
Step 4: Plot each point on the graph.
Step 5: Connect the points to form a line.
x

The trick to this method is that in order to easily fill-in your table of values, the equation should be in
y = form. That is, you need to solve the equation for y if it has not been done for you.
Example 2: Graph x + 2y = -8

(a)
Use the space

(b) Using the table and the graph, determine a rule on how to get from x to y. For example,
multiply the x by 5 and add 7 to get y. Write it in words, then as an equation.
