2 .Train problem
Time taken by a train Of length l meter to pass a stationary object of length b meter is
the time taken to cover (l+b) meters
Time taken by a train Of length l meter to pass a pole or standing man or post is the
time taken to cover l meters
If two trains are moving in the same direction at speds u m/s and v m/s where u> v
then their relative speed is ( u v ) m/s
If two trains are moving in the opposite direction at speds u m/s and v m/s then their
relative speed is ( u +v ) m/s
If two trains of length a meter and b meter are moving in the same direction at speeds
u m/s and v m/s where u> v then the time taken by the faster train to cross the slower
train is a+ b / u-v s
If two trains of length a meter and b meter are moving in the opposite direction at
speeds u m/s and v m/s then the time taken by the trains to cross each other is a+ b /
u+v s

3. BOAT PROBLEMS
1) If b is the speed of the boat and s km/hr is the speed of the stream then the speed along
the stream (downstream) is b+s km/hr and the speed against the stream (upstream) is b-s km/hr

If speed downstream is a km/hr and speed upstream is b km/hr then
Speed in still water = a+b /2 km/hr
Speed of stream = a-b /2 km/hr

4. RACES
1)
Start : if before the start of the race A is at the starting point and B is ahead of A by 10
meters, then we say that A gives B a start of 10 meters
2)
in a 100m race A can give B a start of 10m means that when A runs 100m , B runs 90m
5. CIRCULAR TRACKS
1) FIRST MEETING AT STARING POINT :
when 2 or more ladies start moving simultaneously from the same point on a circle in
the same direction around the circle they all will meet again at the starting point after
time T where Tis the lcm of the times taken by each body to take one complete round

when 2 ladies start moving simultaneously from the same point on a circle in the same
direction / opposite direction around the circle they meet for the first time after time T

t= circumference of the circle / relative speed
when 3 or more ladies start moving simultaneously from the same point on a circle in the
same direction around the circle , they all meet for the first time after time T where
Tis the lcm of the times taken by the faster to meet each of the slower runners .

Distance travelled in 1 hr =350 x 60 x60 /10 m

v1 = v2 = v
2v = 126 km

V = 63km/hr

v1 - v2 = (125 + 100/ 15)( 60 x60 / 1000 ) =
