1.INTRODUCTION

3
As we come across people in life, we wonder why some people are quiet and passive
while others are loud and aggressive. The word personality can describe it best. Personality is
set of qualities that differentiate an individual from other on manners, attitude, behavior and
qualities that make the person standout from the crowd. Personality cannot be determined by
only outlook or appearance of a person but also by ways an individual reacts and interacts with
others. It also reflects the psychological system of a person.

Personality depends on heredity as well as the environment in which an individual is

born and brought up. The physical appearance, stature, gender, bone structure and energy
level are governed by heredity. Traits such as shyness, fear and aggression are also attributed to
genes. The culture in which a person is raised, social groups, friend circle etc. are some of
environmental factors that influence personality of an individual.

Managers should consider personality along with technical skills while recruiting
individuals for job because it influences both mood and performance in the workplace.
Determining personality is not easy so some tests have been designed including The Big Five
personality test, The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator test etc.

I have taken The Big Five Personality test on the behalf of my very close friend Raj and
my loving sister Twinkle. Both of them are different from each other as they have been brought
up in different cultures and environment. I have known both of them since childhood. This
assignment is aimed at performing the Big Five Personality test on two individuals whom we
know and finding out whether the test results hold true.

2.RAJ:

4
 2.1.ABOUT RAJ: Raj is a 25 year old Male, born to a lower middle class family in Orissa.
As a child, he was never involved in mischief of any kind in the class. He was very
creative, used to write poems and make beautiful paintings. He was extremely shy
among bunch of schoolmates during childhood. He was kind of face to forget boy who
never wanted to show himself to the outside world. Being a brilliant student and
disciplined boy he was always popular with teachers and friends. He always tried to be
amongst the toppers in class. The popularity gave him to open up with people and he
was able to combat his shyness. I have never seen such an ambitious person in my life.
 2.2.IMPACT AND INFLUENCE ON RAJ:
 He never got enough attention from his parents or society as his brother and
sister used to get which cultivated inferiority complex and shyness within him.
 He was crazy for small things like bicycles which he never got as he belonged to
lower middle class. So he had to compromise on his demands. This made him achieve
everything in life which he didn’t get in childhood.
 Popularity and respect towards Raj was evident among teachers and classmates
as he was good student. This made him open up in a crowd and slowly he became
outgoing.
 Need to achieve and succeed made him work harder thus he could make it to get
a high rank in engineering entrance examinations. He got admission in National
Institute of Technology, Nagpur. He got various scholarships even which made his
education easier and induced less burden on his parents comparatively.
 A quality education from a premiere institution and a professional degree in
engineering degree changed his life. The stay for 4 years completely changed him. He
became outgoing, started enjoying life and no wonders he always topped in class with
distinction. He was recruited by Infosys as software engineer and sent to USA
considering is good performance.

 2.3.DETERMINANTS OF HIS PERSONALITY

5
 HERIDITY: His parents were typical lower middle class family but with lots of
family culture and values. Raj respects elders and is concerned about his values
and culture because he has got this nature in his genes.
 ENVIRONMENT: He was brought up in a small town so initially he was reserved
and not so outgoing. But as he gained popularity and admission into VNIT,
Nagpur changed his life and he became more outgoing and open up with every
one.
 FAMILY STRUCTURE: In his family, he have his father who is working in Mines
as officer , mother a housewife and two siblings. Being the middle among his
siblings he had to compromise and that made him of adjusting nature. He also
had lot of responsibility of his younger sister and was scared of his brother. He
became therefore more responsible of whatever he does.
 ECONOMIC FACTORS : He belonged to lower middle class family so he had
financial crisis at every point of his life while he was growing up. So he has a
nature of saving money and he spend less and conserve more .
 SUCCESS AND FAILURE: Always stood first in school days , got admission in one
of the best engineering college and topped the college with distinction , he was
also sent to USA for good performance , all of this has made him more
confident ,calm and relaxed.
 THINKING STYLE : He has so much of self respect for himself that fascinates
people. The reason for the same might be that in childhood no one paid attention
to him and now everyone who knows him, they love and respect him. Almost
everything has changed in his attitude like now he has left behind the inferiority
complex which was within him as kid. He loves people and he can do anything
for them if they need help. He leaves behind his own important meetings and
work for the rescue of others. I have never seen him depressed in tough
situations.

3.TWINKLE

6
 3.1.ABOUT TWINKLE:
She is 27 years old, Female and just married. She is the eldest in my family. She was
beautiful and very cute since childhood and everyone easily got attracted to her. She
had got violent because of this during her childhood but that alarmed my parents and
they acted in right time. She was nurtured well by my parents and even after many
tragic incidents on her life, she coped up because of right action taken by my parents.

 3.2.IMPACT AND INFLUENCE ON TWINKLE:

 Twinkle was loved and cared by everyone who came across. Lots of attraction
and love made her too much mischievous.
 She became too demanding as my parents used to fulfill each and every demand
of her though they were not financially strong.
 Situation became worse when she became violent when her demands for toys,
chocolates and ice creams were not fulfilled. That is when my parents started
scolding her and 0stopped showing softness to her to takeout her violence and
negative attitude.
 As she grew up her violence vanished may be because of proper measure taken
by my parents.
 She totally changed when my family shifted from Delhi to a small town in
Orissa. She could not adjust in the small town but had to stay because my father
was working there. She could not cope up with the people with different
mentality. They were bit conservative and bad attitude from our relatives change
her attitude as well. She stopped studying because she could not concentrate as
style of teaching was also different.
 The second half of her childhood was tragic and tough one. She could not fair
well in exams, she started becoming depressed. She could not make friends, she
was lonely. She could do that well in her Board exams. She lost her ambition.

 3.3.DETERMINANTS OF TWINKLE’s PERSONALITY

7
 HERIDITY: My parents were bit conservative because they originally belonged
to a conservative town in Orissa. This made Twinkle conservative as well.
Twinkle was good natured and attached to family roots because it was heredity
as my parents were also of same nature.
 ENVIRONMENT: When she was born in Delhi, her early part of childhood was
full of mischief and she was violent because of love of parents and relatives. She
was violent even. But very soon when my parents shifted to Orissa, because of
lack of proper school, she became lonely and that made her bit shy and
introvert. But it was not permanent as she worked as an engineer; she again
changed and became extrovert and outgoing, maybe because of change of place
with less conservativeness and more of modern values.
 FAMILY STRUCTURE: My family comprises of my father and mother, me as
younger sister and Twinkle is elder sibling. After I was born her mischievous
activities also became less visible maybe because of a responsibility as elder sister
to me. She became more matured and helping.
 ECONOMIC FACTORS : My family belonged to upper middle class . Because of
this , Twinkle’s demands were always fulfilled. So she didn’t have urge to earn
money in later stage. She was more involved in social activities than professional
activities.
 SUCCESS AND FAILURE: At school she was the most fast, smart and intelligent
student among her counterparts. She excelled in almost everything she did
including sports, studies, dance, singing and even painting. Even in college she
was good student so she was always confident. She never failed except once
when my parents shifted to Orissa from Delhi.
 THINKING STYLE: She believes in being truthful and helping others. She loves
kindness and being cool, relaxed and calm.

BIG FIVE PERSONALITY TEST

8
Big Five Personality Test is a guide to information about the Big Five Personality Test -
and other of the most used personality tests:  Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), Discover
(DISC) etc. Personality test is now used in several domains such as personal development,
Leadership Training, Teambuilding, Recruitment and candidate assessment. In the recent years
the Big Five Personality Test has gained momentum, claiming to have more relevance and
nuance than the MBTI. Contrary to MBTI the Big Five does not generate stereotypical
personality types. It makes it hard to remember ones score and makes comparing and
discussing types harder. The Big Five personality trait is summarized below:

• Openness - open-minded, an interest in art, emotional, adventurous, curiosity.

• Conscientiousness -self-disciplined, result oriented, tradition and dutiful.
• Extraversion - high energy level, people person, extrovert
• Agreeableness - compassionate, cooperative, ability to forgive and being pragmatic
• Neuroticism - sensible, vulnerable, in extreme: emotional unstable and neurotic.

RESULTS:

After taking the personality test on behalf of both of them, I learned a lot and made lots of
assumptions from the test results about personality of both. For Raj, results were:

i) Openness to Experience/Intellect: Low score with percentile of 20 which indicated

Low scorers end to be conventional, down to earth, narrow interests, uncreative. So
he is unconventional.
ii) Conscientiousness: High scorers tend to be reliable, well-organized, self-
disciplined, careful; Low scorers tend to be disorganized, undependable, and
negligent. He got Percentile of 58 which indicated he is neither organized nor
disorganized.

iii) Extraversion: High scorers tend to be sociable, friendly, fun loving, talkative; Low
scorers tend to be introverted, reserved, inhibited, and quiet. He got Percentile of 93
which indicates that he is extremely outgoing, social, and energetic.

9
iv) Agreeableness High scorers tend to be good natured, sympathetic, forgiving,
courteous; Low scorers tend to be critical, rude, harsh, and callous. He got
percentile of 97 which indicates that he is good-natured, courteous, and
supportive.
v) Neuroticism: High scorers tend to be nervous, high-strung, insecure, worrying;
Low scorers tend to be calm, relaxed, and secure. He got percentile of 11 which
indicates that he is calm, even in tense situations.

The Results for Twinkle are:

i) Openness to Experience/Intellect: She got Percentile of 2 which indicates that she
prefers traditional and familiar experiences.
ii) Conscientiousness: She got Percentile of 13 which indicates that she is
disorganized.
iii) Extraversion: She got Percentile of 79 which indicates that she is relatively social
and enjoys the company of others.
iv) Agreeableness: She got Percentile of 83 which indicates that she is good-natured,
courteous, and supportive.
v) Neuroticism: She got Percentile of 11 which indicates that she is calm, even in tense
situations.

COMPARISION:

10
I was able to compare the results based on personality test and the behavior which they had
exhibited to the world. From the comparison the facts which could be drawn are the following:

I. In real life Twinkle appears to be grounded to her roots and values which is also visible
from the personality test. And Raj appears to be somewhat traditional and bit of
openness to experience which is visible from the personality test which shows the score
of 20.
II. According to the personality test Twinkle got a score of 13 in trait conscientiousness
but in real life she seems to be more organized, contradicting the result. Whereas Raj is
a bit disorganized in a way which is even visible from the test results.
III. Twinkle and Raj both are extrovert in real life and test also indicate the same.
IV. Raj and Twinkle both are well natured, supportive and courteous. This can also be seen
in the test results.
V. On the neuroticism, Twinkle seems to be more of calm and forgiving whereas raj seems
to behave nervously in some situations but he is forgiving, which indicates that the test
result came true for Twinkle in this case, whereas it differed in Raj’s case.

Managers with Personality Test

As a manager of a company personality test is definitely going to be of big help. Individuals

differ from each other in all aspects and distinguishing the features and formulating strategy
for each is not always possible for managers individually. This test is of great help to study
human psychology and thus while recruiting we would require this test when in confusion
about the behavior, manners and attitude of employees or candidates who apply for job and
also understanding the employees for conflict resolution.

CONCLUSION
11
After studying results for both of them, I came to conclusion that for results for Raj is
matching to the personality test because being from lower middle class family he has got
values from his family that makes him good natured, kind and supportive. Environment made
him outgoing. For Twinkle, I conclude that results match her personality because she is social,
good-natured and calm. She is also disorganized because of tragic situation she has faced. Thus
I conclude that results for most of the Big Five Traits holds true to an extent.
