So now after eight years of
rumour and speculation about a
tablet device from Apple has
come to an end, and the most
anticipated device is unveiled
with the name iPad.The
announcement was made by
Apple chief executive Steve Jobs
at an event in San Francisco. So
this the first new product in any
category where people have the
great option of having a hundred
thousand application integrated in
it

CEO Apple : Steve Jobs

History
Apple's development of a
tablet computer began with
the Newton MessagePad 100, first
introduced in 1993. This effort led
to the creation of
the ARM6 processor core
with Acorn Computers. Apple also
developed a
prototype PowerBook Duo-based
tablet computer, thePenLite, but
did not sell it to avoid hurting
MessagePad sales. Apple released
several more Newton-based PDAs,
and discontinued the last in the
line, the MessagePad 2100, in
1998.
Contd….
Apple reentered the market in
2007 with the iPhone. Smaller than the iPad
but featuring a camera and mobile phone,it
pioneered the multitouch interface of iPhone
OS. By late 2009, the iPad's release had been
rumored for several months
with iSlate and iTablet among speculated
names. The product was announced on
January 27, 2010, at an Apple press
conference at the Yerba Buena Center for the
Arts in San Francisco.
Three days later, at the 52nd Grammy
Awards, Stephen Colbert used an iPad in
announcing the nominees.

Architecture
• The architecture can be grouped into
3 headings:
 The A4 processor
 iPhone OS(OS X)
 System requirements
The A4 processor
 It is a 32bit-ARM based system-on-
chip designed by Apple
 It is first used in iPad
 It was first announced on jan 27,2010,
during Apple’s “Latest creation” event
 It runs at 1GHz and contains a Cortex-
A8 CPU core with a powerVR SGX
graphics processor
 It was custom designed by Apple
engineers to be extremely
powerfull and efficient
 The performance is like anything
we ve ever seen on a touch based
device
 It makes iPad fantastic for
everything from productivity apps
to games
 The A4 chip is so power efficient
that it helps iPad get up to 10
hours of battery life on a single
charge

2.iPhone OS(OS X)
 It is a mobile OS developed and
marketed by Apple Inc
 It is a default OS of the iPhone, iPod

 It is derived from Mac OS x and Is a
Unix like operating system by
nature.

device memory

iPad iBooks
Apple also announced the new
iBooks app for iPad, which
includes Apple’s new iBookstore,
the best way to browse, buy and
read books on a mobile device.
Once you’ve bought a book, it’s
displayed on your Bookshelf. To
read it, all you have to do is tap
on it and it opens up. The high-
resolution, LED-backlit screen
displays everything in sharp, rich,
color, so it’s very easy to read,
even in low light.
Apple iPad iWork
The iWork productivity applications that
you know and love on the Mac —
Keynote, Pages, and Numbers —
have been completely redesigned for
iPad.2 So you can create great-looking
presentations, documents, and
spreadsheets. All using just your
fingers. And while they’re easy to
use, they’re also the most powerful
productivity apps ever built for a
mobile device.
Ipad Accessories
With a soft microfiber interior and reinforced panels to
provide structure, the iPad Case is the perfect way to carry
around your iPad. And it does double duty. It folds in just
the right places to act as a stand that holds iPad at an ideal
angle for watching videos and slideshows or for typing on
the onscreen keyboard.
The iPad Keyboard Dock combines a dock for charging your iPad
with a full-size keyboard. The dock has a rear dock connector port,
which lets you connect to an electrical outlet using the USB Power
Adapter, sync to your computer, and use accessories like the iPad
Camera Connection Kit. An audio line out port lets you connect to a
stereo or powered speakers (audio cable sold separately).

iPad Dock
With the iPad Dock, you get easy access to a dock connector port
for syncing or charging, and an audio line out port for connecting
to powered speakersvia an optional audio cable. The iPad Dock
also supports other iPad accessories, such as the iPad Dock
Connector to VGA Adapter and the iPad Camera Connection

iPad Camera Connection Kit

The iPad Camera Connection Kit gives you two ways to
import photos and videos from a digital camera: using your
camera’s USB cable or directly from an SD card. iPad
supports standard photo formats, including JPEG and RAW.
Comparison with other e-readers
Sony e-reader
pros
• Large sized ePaper display facilitates easy
reading. In some models it is also touch-
sensitive, allowing hassle free navigation.
• Most models can play MP3 and unencrypted
AAC audio files.
• Full metal body enhances durability and
resistance versus physical impacts.
• Looks much better than the current crop of
eReaders
Cons:
• Limited collection of titles available at the
Sony bookstore.
• Device has to be connected to a PC to
transfer eBooks.
• Device does not support wireless networks or
Wi-Fi hotspots.
Advantages

 Portable - smaller than a laptop, with

connectivity options that are similar.
 Can use any existing iPhone app
 Uses a 1Ghz new Apple chip
 10 hours of battery life (very good
versus a laptop)
 Has 3G, and will be unlocked
 At&t will provide unlimited US data
for $30 and it will be prepaid
 Already runs iPhone apps
 International wireless plans are
coming in the month of june
 Will run iWork
Disadvantages

Cost and ongoing data plans for

ebook reading - up to $830 + $30 a
month (UK price likely to be £600-
700 GBP)
Usability (on screen keyboard versus
real keyboard) - there's a dock with a
built in keyboard sold separately to
negate this.
Heavier than a Kindle
Flash. The Safari browser included on
the iPad doesn't have Flash -- just like
the iPhone. That's a huge hindrance
No camera. A user-facing camera to
enable video conferencing and/or
video chats was high on the list of
features expected. It doesn't have one.
CONCLUSION
Will the iPad become the success Apple anticipates, or will it be a just a gadget for
those that already have all the other electronic gadgets available and want to show
off?

In my opinion, this tablet computer is the start of a new revolution in computing. The
ease of use of the iPad, the myriad of applications already there and in development,
and its great design and capabilities will attract many people. The price range, starting
at $ 499 all the way up to $ 829 for the 64 GB model with 3G, will not be much of a
stumbling block for this, given that a top range laptop is more pricey than this.

Given that the machine can take over many of the older machinery people have at
home and at the office, and the fantastic specs of the screen, I expect Apple's iPad to
show up in board rooms, during presentations and in schools all over the world soon!
