Practical Investigation: Ticker-Timer Experiment

The document summarizes an experiment investigating how gravity affects acceleration. A ticker-timer was used to measure the distance and time taken for a cart to travel down ramps of varying angles. Acceleration was calculated using the equations of motion. The results were plotted on a graph of acceleration versus the sine of the angle, which showed a linear relationship confirming gravity as the cause of acceleration.

Practical Investigation: Ticker-timer

experiment
Partners: Julie, Tracey, Jessica and Jessica
Aim: The aim of this practical is to investigate the effect of gravity on
acceleration.

Apparatus:

Ticker-time
Ticker-time tape
Dynamic cart
Ramp
Bricks

Method
1. Set up a ramp on one brick, and measure the angle is makes with the
ground.
2. Place the dynamics cart at the top of a ramp, and securely fasten the
ticker timer tape to the back for the cart. Place a brick on top of the cart.
Ensure that the ticker-timer tape goes threads through the ticker time.
3. Turn on the ticker-timer when you are ready to release the dynamic cart.
4. Measure the distance between the last 4 dots on the ticker timer. Record
this measurement as d.
5. Repeat the run without changing the angle to record a second
measurement for d.
6. Measure the total time taken for the cart to reach from the top to the
bottom of the ramp. Record this as t.
7. Add another brick, and repeat the procedure from steps 1 to 6, until you
have 4-6 angles.
8. Calculate your final velocities v using your values for d.
9. Use your values for v and t, and assume u= 0, find the acceleration of the
cart.
10.Find the average accelerations between your two readings for the same
angle.

11.Calculate sin .
12.Plot a graph of a against sin .
13.Determine the gradient of your graph.
