A2 Media Evaluation

The document discusses how the media product uses and develops conventions of real media through having a low budget, simple costumes and storyline, and few actors. It also discusses how effective the combination of the main product and ancillary texts is by linking visuals and explaining the story. The document also discusses what was learned from audience feedback about the intended genre, text size, and on-screen editing, and how research was conducted online to plan preliminary tasks like a movie magazine and poster.

A2 media evaluation.

By Paphapan Bates
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms
and conventions of real media products?

My media product doesn't challenge other media products because its

very similar to what's showing at the cinema and the popularity of it.
I do feel I have develop my product which challenge forms and
conventions of real media products as my product had very little
special effects and its low budget unlike real media products which
would have a lot of special effects (if it the genre of fantasy) and
their budget would be much higher than mine. I also kept my
costume as simple as possible as I wanted the main focus on the
story line. If my final piece was a real media production there would
be more actors than two. It would also take me much longer than a
day.
How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary text?

I feel the combination of my main product and ancillary text is very effective
because they all link very well as some of the pictures I took are the still from
the main product. Both ancillary tasks are self explanatory because it tells
what the story is about for my main product.
I really like my poster (one of the ancillary tasks) because it explains what the
teaser trailer is about without much text. Although the photo is not a still from
the teaser trailer I still like it because my other ancillary task is a still from the
teaser trailer and I didn't want to use two stills from the teaser trailer.
I was a bit disappointed with my magazine task because I took the photo
landscape not vertical which caused a lot of problem for me in the making of
the magazine but I stuck with it and in the end I liked it because of its style-
which is different from what you normally see on the shelfs.
What have you learned from your audience feedback?

My teaser trailer is a love story but from my audience feedback they took it as a
comedy. Clearly this wasn't the reaction I was looking for but it did helped me
a lot as I learned that because something is so popular doesn't mean
everyone will like it. I also learned my ways of filming didn't please everyone
and I could have made a few improvements One of the audience member
suggested I could of have music as it would of made it more interesting.
Another thing I've learned was that text was too small for my audience to see as
they were sitting too far away. If my teaser trailer was to be shown on cinema
screen this would cause a major problem, this did not occur to me whilst
editing as my original thought was to show it on the computer.
But what I really learned most was that some of my editing may look good to me
but it doesn't mean its going to look good on a big screen.
How did you use media technologies in the construction and research,
planning and evaluation stages?

Before I could start filming I did a lot of research using a wide range of
technology such as the Internet being my main source of research. To help
me with my preliminary task of creating a movie magazine I looked at Empire
homepage to understand what layout I should use for my magazine poster,
also what basic information I should have on a movie magazine.
As for my other preliminary task I looked at two fantasy films poster as its the
genre I'm focusing on. I first looked at the New Moon poster, which helped
this is task a lot because I noticed how simple the poster is which clearly
helps get message of what the movie is about. I considered this when I was
making my poster. I also looked at Avatar's poster, I also found this to be
interesting, however with just a glance of the Avatar's you don't really
understand what the movie is about. It was very important to me that my
poster gave a small information about what the story line is.
I didn't use any other technology apart from the internet which I had no regret
about because the internet is an easy way to get information. Its also a way to
save link onto my blog which the viewers can easily access.
