Islamia English School, Abu Dhabi.: Grade 9 Graphs Chapter - 5

The document contains instructions for several graphing exercises involving functions of the form y=f(x). Students are asked to: 1. Graph two functions on the same axes and find the approximate solutions of the equation formed by setting them equal. 2. Repeat with two new functions over a different domain. 3. Repeat again with two additional new functions and find the approximate solutions of the resulting equation. Additional exercises include graphing a single function to find its minimum and maximum values, constructing a table of values and smooth curve from a more complex function, and using the graph to determine a range of x-values where the associated quantity is greater than a threshold.

GRADE 9
CHAPTER 5

GRAPHS

1. Draw the graphs of the functions

y=x 23 x +10

y=x +7

and

for -1

x 5. Use a scale of 2 cm to 1 unit for x and 1 cm to 1 unit for y.

Hence find approximate solutions of the equation
2. Draw the graphs of the functions

y=x 2 +3 x

and

x 23 x+10=x+ 7 .
y=20x

for 0

x 4. Use a scale of 2 cm to 1 unit for x and 1 cm to 1 unit for y.

Hence find approximate solutions of the equation
3. Draw the graphs of the functions

y=6 xx

and

x +3 x=20x .
y=2 x+ 1

for 0

x 5. Use a scale of 2 cm to 1 unit for x and 1 cm to 1 unit for y.

Hence find approximate solutions of the equation
4. Draw the graph of

y=x 11 x +3

6 xx =2 x+1 .

for values of x from -4 to +4,

using a scale of 2 cm for one unit on the x-axis and 2 cm for 5 units
on the y-axis. Use your graph to find the lowest value and the
highest value of the equation.

(b) On graph paper, using a scale of 4 cm to represent 1 unit on the

x-axis, and 1 cm to represent 1 unit on the y-axis, plot the points
from your completed table and join them to form a smooth curve.
(c) From your graph obtain, to 1 decimal place, the range of values
of x for which

x 2 ( 3 x8 ) >6 .

(d) From your graph, write down the value of x for which there is a
minimum point.
