OUTCOMES FROM ALBERTA PROGRAM OF STUDIES

General
Learning
Outcomes:
Specific
Learning
Outcomes:

General Outcome: Use patterns to describe the world and to solve problems.
General Outcome: Develop number sense.
1. Identify and describe patterns found in tables and charts.
5. Describe and apply mental mathematics strategies, such as:
skip counting from a known fact
using doubling or halving
using doubling or halving and adding or subtracting one more group
using patterns in the 9s facts
using repeated doubling to determine basic multiplication facts to 9 9 and related division facts.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will practice the addition of 5s, 6s and 7s by using an array worksheet as well as graph paper to
discover new multiplication equations.
ASSESSMENTS
Observations:

Students are working with their partners to try and come up with as many patterns off the
worksheet as they can.
Students are writing down possible patterns that they may see and not only discussing it .

Key Questions:

What is the pattern rule?

What is 5x5? 6x6? 7x7?

Products/Performances:

Students sheet are full of predictions of various patterns.

Students multiplication sheet is neatly written out and the colours are replicating the
example on the board so everyone has the same thing.

LEARNING RESOURCES CONSULTED

Alberta Program of studies

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT

Multiplication array chart

Graphing table worksheet
Pencil crayons
Strips of paper (2 per student)

PROCEDURE
Prior to lesson

Ensure their are enough worksheets for all students to have a copy.
Introduction

Time

Attention Grabber

Start with multiplication questions.

3x2 4x2 0x1 1x1
We are going to be introducing the 5s 6s and 7s!

2 minutes

Assessment of Prior
Knowledge

Students have no prior knowledge about multiplication past 4s so I am

introducing the 5s 6s and 7s through an array worksheet.

Expectations for
Learning and Behaviour

Students are quiet and tentative when instruction is explained

When they are working on the worksheet, the noise level is at a minimal.

Transition to Body

Write bubbles on board and replicate worksheet.

Body

Learning Activity #1

Teacher Notes: Assessments/

Differentiation

Learning Activity #2

Continue to add onto our multiplication with 5s 6s and 7s

Everyone have the multiplication array chart in front of them
- Together number the top of the array and the side of the array (x and y axis)
- Tell all students to get their crayons out

- Make sure students are colouring in the bubbles and not scribbling over the
whole sheet

- Explain the colouring and neatness rules

Time
12 minutes

Meanwhile while students are working, hand out table

- tell students to put the array aside for now but still keep it visible for them to
see

- Explain what students are going to do with this worksheet

- There is a chunk of blocks and the students is to figure out the equation pf the

7 minutes

blocks

- They will not shout it out but write it down for each question

Differentiation

Learning Activity #3

Teacher Notes: Assessments/

Differentiation

- Example this on the board so students understand

- Go over this with the class
Students will now create the own block chunks on the backside

- Think of at least 4 and try to use 5s, 6s, and 7s

- Make an equation and write the answer there as well.

- Students can learn by creating equations that they want to learn about while
still enforcing that they have to use 5s, 6s, and 7s.
Closure

7 minutes

Time

Consolidation of Learning: Students array is filled out in colour and their x and y axis is completed with
it being numbered 1-10.

Feedback To Students

- Ask questions if you don't understand the array

Transition To Next Lesson

Next lesson students will review types of patterns by making and describing
the pattern using the pattern rule.

Sponge Activity/Activities

What is a pattern?
Get students to explain what they think a pattern is.
Students have been working with patterns for the last couple of classes and are very familiar
with a pattern and the pattern rule.
Pattern activity worksheet
- Students are going to work with the person beside them and see if they can find any
patterns in the worksheet that is provided.
- Come together as a class
