OBJECTIVES:
To understand the basic rules of basketball
To dribble, pass, and shoot a basketball with proper form
To participate in basketball lead up games
CALIFORNIA PE STANDARDS:
Introductory Activity:
Standard 1.1: Chase, flee, and move away from others in a constantly changing environment.
Fitness Activity:
Standard 3.4: Perform increasing numbers of each: abdominal curl-ups, oblique curl-ups on
each side, modified push-ups or traditional push-ups with hands on a bench, forward
lunges, side lunges, and triceps push-ups from a chair.
Lesson Focus:
Standard 1.13: Hand-dribble a ball continuously while moving around obstacles.
Game:
Standard 1.7: Catch, while traveling, an object thrown by a stationary partner.

Teaching Hints
Instructional cues for dribbling include the
following:
1. Push the ball to the floor. Dont slap it.
2. Push the ball forward when moving.
3. Eyes forward and head up.
Practice the skills in an individual manner as
much as possible. The best alternative is a ball for
every student to shoot and dribble. Reduce taking
turns as much as possible when practicing skills.
Teaching Hints
Be sure that no one is left out of the activity for
long periods of time. Keep everyone active as
much as possible.
