Notes, Reviewer & Exercises: Integral Calculus

This document provides an overview of integral calculus concepts including: 1) Definitions of definite integrals as the limit of Riemann sums representing the area under a curve from x=a to x=b, and indefinite integrals as functions whose derivatives produce the given function. 2) Antiderivatives are functions whose derivatives are equal to the original function, relating the concepts of integration and differentiation. 3) The Fundamental Theorem of Calculus states that if a function f is continuous on an interval [a,b], then the function G(x) defined by the integral of f from a to x is continuous on [a,b] and its derivative is equal to the original function f

DEFINITIONS & FUNDAMENTAL THEOREM OF CALCULUS

Definitions:
A. Definite Integral
Suppose f(x) is continuous on [a,b]. Divided [a,b] into n subintervals of width x and

x
f ( i ) x .

choose

i=1
x i from each interval. Then
f ( x ) dx=lim The definite integral of f(x) is a
n

number and represents the area under the curve f(x) from x=a to x=b.

B. Indefinite Integral
The indefinite integral of f(X) is a function and answers the question, What function
when differentiated gives f(x)?. Indefinite integrals doesnt have the limits of
integration.

C. Antiderivative
Antiderivatives are a function f is a differentiable function F whose derivative is equal to
the original function f. This can be stated symbolically as F = f. The process of solving
for antiderivatives is called antidifferentiation (or indefinite integration) and its opposite
operation is called differentiation, which is the process of finding a derivative.
