Lesson 1-What and Who is Progressivism?
Readiness
1. Goals/Objectives/Standards
a. Goals: The students should be able to identify and explain the various events,
people, reforms, and terms that are important aspects of the Progressive era of
United States History. They will also be able to explain how these reforms impact
the United States today.
b. Objectives: The students will be introduced to progressivism, and will be able to
explain what progressivism is, when and why it occurred, and will be briefly
introduced to multiple progressive figures.
c. Standards: USH.3.2 Explain the origins, goals, achievements, and limitations of the
Progressive Movement in addressing political, economic, and social reform.
(Government; Economics; Individuals, Society, and Culture)
1. Anticipatory Set: The students will be shown a list of laws and policies that the United
States has today, and asked to try and figure out what all of them have in common.
2. Purpose: All of these policies and laws were first formed as a result of the Progressive
Era, and as we discuss the unit we will see how these reforms came into being.
Plan for Instruction
1. Adaptations: The lesson will be taught via lecture. The students will have a worksheet to
facilitate note taking. There will also be a PowerPoint to further facilitate note taking. All
materials will be available to the students via Google Classroom. There will also be a
student tutor to provide more assistance for the students should they need help.
2. Materials: PowerPoint, worksheet, pencils, computer, projector, student-tutor
3. Lesson Presentation: After we introduce progressivism, my student-tutor and I will pass out
the worksheet for the students. Then we will define and explain what progressivism is. We
will then discuss some of the important reformers, and what kind of reforms were sought
after. Once the students have been introduced to what people wanted to reform, we will do
a short activity to discuss why these reforms would be important to society.
a. Students will be divided into groups, and given a reform to discuss the importance
of each issue.
b. After ~10 minutes of discussion, the students will write a short summary of why
they believe their reform topic is important. Then the students will be asked to share
with the class why their reform is important to our society.
i. They will then each turn in the summaries of their group discussion
c. Should we finish the activity early, the students will be asked to work on their
homework reading assignment and to complete their 1 paragraph summary of the
class.
4. Check for Understanding/Review Learning Outcomes: Before the students leave class, they
will be asked to write a 1 paragraph summary of what they learned from the class today.

5. Independent Practice: If the students did not complete the worksheet, they should use the
resources from Google Classroom or their textbook to finish the exercise. The students
should also watch the YouTube Video- America in The 20th Century: The Progressive Era
and take 1 page of notes over it to turn in tomorrow and prepare them for the next class.
Plan for assessmentFormative Assessment: The students will be assessed off of their sharing why different reforms
are important. They will also be assessed off of the summary they wrote and turned in.
Summative Assessment: They will be required to turn in their completed worksheet on the day of
the test.
