Tutorial 7: SC-116 Algebraic Structures Autumn 2015 (Linear Independence, Basis, Co-Ordinates)

This document contains 6 problems related to linear algebra concepts: 1) Find 3 vectors in R3 that are linearly dependent but any 2 are independent. 2) Determine if 4 vectors in R4 are linearly independent and find a basis if not. 3) Show that 2 sets of matrices are subspaces of the space of 2x2 complex matrices and find their dimensions. 4) Find a basis of 2x2 complex matrices where each basis element squared equals the basis element. 5) Show 4 vectors form a basis of R4 and find the coordinate representation of the standard basis in this basis. 6) Find the coordinate representation of a vector in C3 using a given basis.

SC-116 Algebraic Structures Autumn 2015

(Linear independence, basis, co-ordinates )

(1) Find three vectors in R3 that are linearly dependent and such that any two of them
are linearly independent.
(2) Are the vectors x1 = (1, 1, 2, 4), x2 = (2, 1, 5, 2), x3 = (1, 1, 4, 0), x4 = (2, 1, 1, 6)
linearly independent in R4 ? If not find a basis for the subspace of R4 spanned by
the four vectors.
(3) Let V be the vector spaceof 2 2 matrices over the complex numbers. Let W1 be
x x
the matrices of the form
and let W2 be the set of matrices of the form
y z

a b
.
a c
i) Show that W1 and W2 are subspaces of V .
ii)Find the dimensions of W1 , W2 , W1 + W2 and W1 W2 .
(4) Let V be the vector space of 2 2 matrices over the complex numbers. As seen this
has dimension 4. Find a basis of V consisting of matrices A1 , A2 , A3 and A4 such
that A2j = Aj for each j.
(5) Show that the vectors x1 = (1, 1, 0, 0), x2 = (0, 0, 1, 1), x3 = (1, 0, 0, 4), x4 = (0, 0, 0, 2)
form a basis of R4 . Find the coordinates of the standard basis vectors in the ordered
basis {x1 , x2 , x3 , x4 }.
(6) Find the coordinates of the vector (1, 0, 1) in the basis of C3 consisting of the vectors
(2i, 1, 0), (2, 1, 1), (0, 1 + i, 1 i).
