Assignment 2 (50 Marks) : (Faculty of Engineering - Program of Civil Engineering) KA31503 Theory of Structures II

This document provides instructions for Assignment 2 of the Theory of Structures II course. It contains two questions that ask students to use the slope deflection method to analyze beams shown in Figures 1 and 2. For the first beam, students are asked to determine reactions with given support displacements and draw shear and moment diagrams without applied loads. For the second beam, students must determine reactions with an applied load and given material properties, then draw the corresponding diagrams.

(Faculty of Engineering - Program of Civil Engineering)

KA31503 Theory of Structures II

Assignment 2 (50 Marks)

Instruction: Answer the questions.
Question 1
Using the slope deflection method, solve the beam shown in Figure 1. Consider the
beam without the applied load. Assume that support B settles at 24 mm and support
A rotates counterclockwise 0.005 rad. The modulus of elasticity (E) and the moment
of inertia (I) are constant for the entire structure.
(a) Determine the reactions for all supports.
(15 Marks)
(b) Draw moment and shear diagrams for the beam.
(10 Marks)

Question 1
Using the slope deflection method, solve the beam with the applied load as shown in
Figure 2. Assume that the modulus of elasticity (E) = 200 GPa and the moment of
inertia (I) = 120 x 106 mm4.
(a) Determine the reactions for all supports.
