Module 9 Example Problem

An 88% silver-12% copper alloy is analyzed at different temperatures on the copper-silver phase diagram. At 1000C, the alloy is a single liquid phase. At 800C, the alloy separates into liquid and solid solution phases. Near 780C, the alloy separates into two solid solution phases with different compositions depending on if temperature is slightly above or below 780C. The microstructure at each temperature is represented with a sketch using circular fields showing the different phases present and their compositions.

Module 9 Example Problem

M9 Ex1
Consider the binary eutectic copper-silver phase diagram, and make phase analyses of an
88 wt % Ag-12 wt % Cu alloy at the temperatures (a) 1000oC, (b) 800oC, (c) 780oC + T,
and (d) 780oC - T. In the phase analyses, include:
(i)
(ii)
(iii)
(iv)

The phases present

The chemical compositions of the phases
The amounts of each phase
Sketch the microstructure by using circular fields.
