Wikipedia defined Social Learning Tools are those tools used for pedagogical and
androgogical purposes that utilize social software and social media in order to facilitate learning
through interactions between people and systems. According to Thompson (2007), social
proprioception provides a sense of connectedness and awareness to others without direct
communication although the communities are not within sight. University of Saskatchewan also
said that Social Media can be an effective tool for teaching and learning in higher education. It
can help connect students to information and help them generate a dialogue with their teacher
and other students about a course. It can also help students and faculty build professional
networks that connect them to communities. From a student`s perspective, i think it is great the
use of social media as a learning platform in tertiary level education if students use it in the right
way on the right purpose.
First of all, students can improve writing skills through their blog. According to Hudson
(2013), instead of traditional writing projects, blogs create great opportunities for students to
write and display their writing on a larger scale. Usually, the tertiary education students will have
a blog to upload and share their assignment. Besides that have students blogging about the class
lesson that they attend. Actually there are some students that want to expose what they are feel
and think about their class today either want to agree otr not about what lecture talk about in the
class. By having students read each others blog posts, they will create a stronger community
with one another, discovering experiences and reactions.
Secondly, students and lecture can use social media as a communication tools. Like
Facebook, Twitter offers a quick way to post class announcements and reminders as well as realtime information on class field trips. ( John 2014 ). By following the Twitter feeds of experts in
the field or even hashtags focused on a current world issue, students can learn more about what is
happening in the world around them. Usually Twitter will update current issue faster than
Facebook because the capacity content in Twitter smaller than Facebook. However, students only
can discuss their project or assignment in Twitter but not to reading it. Otherwise students have
to put links on their assignment to let their friends read the assignment because Twitter is
different from Facebook that do not have the limits of words.
Last but not least, Facebook is known as a place to post status updates, announcements,
photos, and video. Create a Facebook group for each class, on which students can post
assignments, make announcements, and remind students about important deadlines. As a students
I actually prefer Facebook to upload my assignment and post it to my friends as we have a
grouping assignment. Not only that, students also can upload videos on Facebook. Basically, if I
found something that very useful to me and my friends, I will upload it on Facebook because
Facebook can put a lot of things.
Generally, Students are continuously connected to the internet through their mobiles,
tablets, etc. and hence rapidly transmit information to friends, family and other connections. This
information is a lot more than just hilarious videos or vacation snapshots. People share views,
opinions, tips, projects, study material and other such useful stuff with each other. They
exchange helpful information for classes and examinations. Their ability to access, evaluate,
maintain and share information is fantastic without even being aware that they are actually
developing such skills day by day. The older generations need to understand the magnitude of
this new style of communication. ( Emanual 2008)
