Influence of Sawdust Ash (SDA) As Admixture in Cement Paste and Concrete

This study investigated using sawdust ash (SDA) as an admixture in cement paste and concrete to improve mechanical and durability properties while also addressing disposal of sawdust waste from timber industries. Concrete mixtures with 0-10% SDA from a timber shed in Nigeria were experimentally tested. Results showed addition of up to 2% SDA increased compressive strength and acid resistance while retarding setting time, but also decreased shrinkage and workability.

Influence of Sawdust

Ash (SDA) as
Admixture in Cement
Paste and Concrete

Sawdust is one of industrial waste in

timber industry that causes health and
environmental problems.
This study was conducted to
investigate the use of sawdust ash
(SDA) as admixture in cement
paste and concrete to improve the
mechanical
and
durability
properties. It may also economical
and can solve the disposal
problem.

Introduction

This
study
was
experimental method.

using

an

The six concretes were mixed

with addition of 0,2,4,6,8,10 %
SDA from Yola timber shed in
Adamawa State, Nigeria.

Experiment

The addition of SDA is recommended

only up to 2% SDA because it can
increased the compressive strength of
concrete, the resistance of concrete
exposed to acidic environment, the
initial and final setting of cement paste
and could be used as a retarder, but it
also has a decreasing effect on dry
linear shrinkage and can decreased
the workability (slump) of concrete.
