Lesson 1

This lesson plan outlines how the teacher will have students live blog about a novel to practice explaining literary events in their own words. To begin, students will fill out an exit slip about blogging to assess their familiarity. Then they will read and discuss an article introducing literature and social media fusions. The teacher will model blogging about the novel, and students will independently blog and discuss in class. To conclude, students will reflect on blogging benefits and responsibilities. If technology fails, printed articles will be used, and examples provided for unclear concepts. Students will submit blog portfolios for assessment. Accommodations include remediation through alternative assignments.

Pre-assessment: (What will I use for pre-assessment, and how will I use
the results of the pre-assessment?)
Students will fill out an exit slip discussing their ideas on the uses of
blogging. This will help me to determine how open they are to the idea of
live blogging literature.

Standard(s): (Include specific state standards.)

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.11-12.6
Use technology, including the Internet, to produce, publish, and
update individual or shared writing products in response to ongoing
feedback, including new arguments or information.

Objectives: (What should students be able to do at the end of the lesson?)

SWBAT: Explain the events of a novel in their own language through use of
an online blog.

Instruction: (How will I present new material and make learning relevant?
Bullet the order and content you plan to teach in the lesson. Include
proposed questions and anticipated responses from students.)
I will model this process through maintaining my own blog, and
following the students reading schedule, I will post and reflect along
with the students. We will incorporate our blogs into daily discussion
by allowing the students to refer to their blogs in full class and small
group discussions
Guided and Independent Practice: (How will I get students to
practice/apply what has just been taught?)
They will use what they learn in class to improve their future blog
posts.
Closure: (How can I bring closure to summarize learning and enhance
retention of the material?)
We will close by having a group discussion about what we think the
benefits and drawbacks of blogs are, and discuss internet responsibility.

Alternate Plan B: (What will I do if students do not understand the

material? What will I do if technology doesnt work?)
I will pre-print a copy of the article in case of technology failure, I can read
the article out loud to the students.

If students do not understand the concepts discussed, I will provide

examples of liveblogging and livetweeting, so they can get some actual
experience with the concept.
Post-Assessment: (What data will give me information about students
understanding of the lesson, and how will this assessment be used?)
Students will submit a 5 blog portfolio of what they consider their best

reflecting on prior knowledge, critical analysis, and making predictions
about the text.
