1 - Assignment - 1 (Signal & System)

This document contains an assignment for a Signals and Systems course. It includes 3 problems related to signal energy, power, and transformations. Problem 1 asks students to determine the total energy and time-averaged power of the signal x(t)=cos(t). Problem 2 involves sketching a discrete time signal x[n] and its transformations x[-n+2] and x[-n-2]. Problem 3 asks students to determine the values of t for which transformed signals of x(t)=0 for t<-2 and t>5 will be guaranteed to be zero. The assignment is due on March 14, 2011 by 6:00 pm.

Instructor: Alam Zaib

Assignment No.1:

Spring Semester 2011

Dated: Mar. 04, 2011

Signal energy, power & transformations

Problem 1:Determine total energy, E and total time-averaged power, P for the continuous-time
signal x ( t ) = cos ( t ) .

Problem 2:A discrete time (DT) signal is given as:

1 ; for n = 3, 2, 1

x[ n] = n ; for n = 0,1, 2,3, 4

0 ; elsewhere

Sketch the signal x[n] and label it properly.

 Sketch the signals (i) x[ n + 2] and (ii) x[ n 2] by doing following operations on x[ n] :
(a) First folding the signal and then shifting
(b) First shifting the signal and then folding
(c) Also check your results of transformations mathematically

Problem 3:Let x ( t ) be a signal with x ( t ) = 0 for t < 2 and t > 5 . Determine the values of t for
which following signals are guaranteed to be zero.
(a) x (1 t )

(b) x ( 3t + 1)

(c) x ( 2 ( t 1) )

Due date: Monday, Mar. 14, 2011, till 6:00 p.m
