Iowa Teaching Standard #4 - Uses Strategies To Deliver Instruction That Meets The Multiple Learning Needs of Students

This artifact from Miss. Dohmen shows how she meets Iowa Teaching Standard #4 by aligning her classroom instruction with the local reading curriculum, Journey's. Journey's uses research-based instructional strategies to address different cognitive levels in whole group and small group lessons, focusing on reading skills, vocabulary, fluency, phonics, and language. As evidence, Miss. Dohmen includes an example of an end of lesson test from Journey's that assesses comprehension, vocabulary, and grammar based on the lesson. She reflects that administering this weekly summative assessment directly aligns with standards and curriculum, and that the instructional strategies used throughout the week enhance cognitive levels and prepare students for the test.

Description of artifact and how the artifact meets the standard:
Bondurants K-5 adopted curriculum reading series is Journeys. Each grade level uses this series for their reading
curriculum. Journeys does a great job at using researched-based instructional strategies that address the full range of
cognitive levels in both whole group and small group in the following areas: reading skills, vocabulary skills, fluency,
phonics, and language.
This artifact is an example of an end of the lesson test. This summative assessment is based on comprehension questions
from the anchor text, vocabulary questions based on our words and targeted skill, and grammar questions.
Reflection on artifact (what went right, what went wrong, how to make better)
Each week I use the lessons test as a summative assessment that is directly aligned with our curriculum and standards.
Throughout the week we use research-based instructional strategies that help enhance the targeted comprehension skill
and vocabulary skill. These instructional strategies that are used during whole group and small group help enhance the
students cognitive levels. Students have to identify main idea, sequencing, cause and effect, character traits, theme, and
much more. We analyze the text by KWL charts, think pair share, completing graphic organizers, and other strategies.
These strategies help prepare the students for the lessons test at the end of each lesson. Journeys offer lots of different
instructional strategies that meet the need of types of learners.
