Perino Lessonplan

This lesson plan is for a 5th grade science class on cells. The objectives are for students to learn about plant and animal cells, distinguish their differences, create concept maps, and practice technology and group work. Standards addressed include describing cells as the basic unit of structure and function, and comparing cell structures and functions in plants and animals. Assessments include a cell vocabulary quiz and informal evaluation of group work. Materials include diagrams, vocabulary lists, coloring supplies, technology, and an online cell activity. Procedures include introducing cells through a video, discussing cell history and structures, identifying parts on diagrams, creating concept maps in groups, reviewing as a class, an online activity, and a vocabulary quiz.

Standards
PA Standards

S5.B.1.1: Describe how the cell is the basic unit of structure and function for all living things.

S5.B.1.1.1: Recognize that all organisms are composed of cells.

S5.B.1.1.2: Explain the concept of the cell as the basic structural unit of all living things.

S5.B.1.1.3: Compare the structure and function of basic cell parts in organisms (i.e., plants and animals).
ISTE Standards

Creativity and Innovation- students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and
processes applying technology

Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making- Students use critical thinking skills to plan and conduct research, manage
projects, solve problems and make informed decisions using appropriate digital tools and resources.

Enduring Understandings

Exploring systems, order, and organizations in our natural and designed world are integral to understanding the scientific
disciplines and their interdependence.

The structures and functions of various cells are foundational to the understanding of living systems.

Essential Questions

What is a Cell?

What are the differences between a plant and animal cell?

UBD Stage II: Determine Acceptable Evidence

Assessment Tasks
Formal: Students will be given a quiz on cell vocabulary
Informal: Students will be separated into groups for an activity on cell parts. Teacher will be able to assess the ability of the students
working together and review the assignment with the class.

UBD Stage III: Plan Learning Experiences and Instruction

Teacher will introduce cells lesson by playing Cell Rap on YouTube for the classroom
Teacher will discuss:

History of cells

Cells are the basic unit of life

Structure of a plant and animal cells
Difference of a plant and animal cells
Show how cells relate to people

All living things are made up of cells

Cells are the smallest basic unit of life

Diffusion and Osmosis

Teacher will hand out cell diagrams and vocabulary

Teacher reads vocabulary aloud for students to repeat and ask questions.
As a class, teacher and students will color in (with colored pencils) and identify the parts of each cell
Once students have familiarized themselves with the parts and terms of plants and animal cells, Students will split into two groups.
Each group will log onto their computer or iPad and create a concept map, using Inspiration, for their assigned cell (either plant or
animal).
8. Teacher will review the parts labeled by each group as a class and students will be able to identify what the differences are.
9. Teacher will access Cell activity website (provided above). Teacher can give students an opportunity to come up in front of the class and
identify the parts on a plant and animal cell.
10. At the end of the lesson, teacher will hand out a Cell Vocabulary Quiz for students to take at the end of the class
