Portfolio Matrix

This document presents a matrix that maps various academic standards to different ways of incorporating technology into teaching. The matrix includes the Colorado Academic Standards, ISTE Standards for Teachers and Students, Bloom's Taxonomy, and areas of differentiation. For each standard or subject area, an ISTE standard is identified and an example is given of how it could be applied through student use of technology, such as creating a website, video, or app. The reflection at the end notes that the matrix provides many resource ideas but that students could be encouraged to be even more creative, such as designing their own apps, to help uncover their passions and learning styles.

Mathematics
1. Number
Sense,
Properties,
and
Operations

ISTE
Standard:
3D
Example:
For this
standard
it talks
about
being
able to
use
technolog
y to help
evaluate
and
model
different
informatio
n and
research.
I would
use this
and go
online
and find a
website
that
would
help
teach
numbers
and
operation
s in a new
way. This
would
allow
students
to be able
to
understan

ng.
The reason I
picked
understandi
ng is
because this
would be a
way to help
evaluate if
the website I
showed
allowed
them to
learn it in a
new light or
if it was
more
confusing or
difficult to
understand.

3. Analysis,
Statistics,

4. Shape,

ps

ISTE
Standard 2A
Example:
This
standard
talks all
about
interacting
and
publishing
with peers.
So I would
have them
do an
activity in
class with
Geoboards
because we
would be
talking
about
shapes.
Then they
would talk
about it with
peers and
go and find
a website
that might
explain the
same
concept but
in a
different
way or a
different
light.

Applying
By using
applying
students would
be able to
compare both
methods that
have been
taught and
researched and
figure out what
the differences
and similarities
are and how
they make
sense and work
for them.

Reading, Writing, and Communicating

1. Oral
Expression
and
Listening
ISTE
Standard:
2B

2. Reading
for All
Purposes

Example:
Students
would focus
on a genre
of books to
read. They
would then
take that
and
incorporate
either a
storyboard
or build
their own
website as a
way to help
them
explain how
they saw
and
understood
the story.
They would
then be able
to look at
other
previous
websites for
help but
ultimately
they would
create it by
themselves.

Analyzing
Students would
fall under
analyzing for
this example
because they
are looking
deeper into the
genre and the
characteristics
that make up
that genre.
They would
evaluate
different books
that would help
them analyze
them to create
the way they
want to display
it.

3. Writing
and
Compositio
n
4.
Research
and
Reasoning

ISTE
Standard:
5C
Example:
You could
give
students an
example of
an author
and talk to
them about

Applying
Students could
apply what they
learned from
their research
and figure out
how this allows
things to be
more concrete
in their
understanding

how that
author has
changed the
way we see
the book
they wrote.
You might
then have
them
research the
author and
present to
the class
how that
research
might help
them reason
how the
author
writes and
what they
might get
their
inspiration
from.

of who the
author is and
what the intent
is.

Social Studies
1. History
2.
Geography

ISTE
Standard:
3B
Example:
Students
will locate
and
evaluate
countries on
a map that
is on a given
website that
allows them
to move and
change
them to
where they
are actually
located. This
would allow
students to
see things
in a much
broader
perspective.
Giving them
the
knowledge
globally
where they
are so they
can put it on

Analyzing
Students will be
able to
distinguish
between the
two parts of
what is on
paper and what
is on the
screen. This will
help them to
see the culture
of that country
and the location
of which it
belongs into.

paper later.

3.
Economics
4. Civics

ISTE
Standard:
1B

Evaluating
Students would
decide which
potential
candidate they
like and how
they can take a
stand either for
or against an
issue. This will
allow them to
research into
the candidates
and how they
differ.

Example:
Here you
are
addressing
global
issues, so
students
could be
researching
the different
(potential)
presidential
candidates.
You could
have them
find a
website
about each
one and
how that will
help them
understand
and
comprehend
what each
one wants
and
compare
them with
the class
and do a
mini debate.

Science
1. Physical
Science
2. Life
Science

ISTE
Standard:
4A
Example:
Students
could
research
what
different
endangered
animals
challenges
are. They
could figure
out what

Evaluating
Students will be
able to justify
what the
problem that
the animals are
facing and what
the solutions
are. If we do
something then
this will happen
type of thing.

issues they
are facing
and
solutions
that could
help them
return.

3. Earth
Systems
Science

ISTE
Standard:
3A
Example:
Students will
do activity
with rocks
and
minerals.
They will
look up
different
types of
rocks and
minerals
online and
figure out
characteristi
cs. They will
be able to
use this as
to interact
with actually
rocks and
minerals.

Understanding
Students will
better
understand
what rocks and
minerals are by
name and how
they compare
to each other in
the different
groups they are
in.

Differentiation
Learning
Disabilities
- EEOs

ISTE
Standard 4B
Example:
You could
have these
students
take extra
time in
figuring out
something
they are
passionate
about. Once
thats done,
you could
have them
create a
website that
is all about
what they
love. This
would help
them to
reason and
research
their way
through

Applying
Perhaps if they
are applying
what they love
and what they
know with no
judgment and
just fun, the
student will be
able to grow
and develop in
their own way.
This ma allow
them to breathe
a little and
really
understand how
all of this will
work for them.

what helps
them to
understand
things as
they are.

Physical
Disabilities
Gifted/
Talented

ISTE
Standard:
1B
Example:
You could
have the
student
create an
original
website or
maybe
object that
uses
technology
that will
help make it
easier for
them. That
way as a
teacher you
are able to
really
understand
how they
learn and
what they
are
passionate
about.

Understanding
Students could
go above and
beyond with
this so us as the
teacher can see
how the higher
learning
students are
able to really
understand how
they learn and
what can
challenge them.

Other

Reflection: Overall I think this matrix will help to really step outside the box
and understand how there are so many more resources then we might think.
However, I found myself constantly thinking of just one aspect of this. Where
you have to create a website or a video when you could have your students
create their own app or something. All of this will allow me as a future
teacher to use some of these ideas. Kids dont always get the chance to just
let their imaginations and creativity flow, so by doing all this maybe it allows
us to really figure out who they really are beyond the struggles and such.
