I. Objectives
What is the main focus of this lesson?
For students to learn about various environments around the United States, and identify one tribe for each
biome.
How does this lesson tie in to a unit plan? (If applicable.)
One of the greatest skills of Native American tribes was their ability to adapt to their living environment
using the natural resources around them. Students need to be aware of the various environments in order
to help highlight the different lifestyles of different tribes.
What are your objectives for this lesson? (As many as needed.) Indicate connections to applicable national
or state standards. If an objective applies to only certain students write the name(s) of the student(s) to
whom it applies.
The student will
color the United States map according to biomes
identify the names of five Native American tribes and their respective biomes

What is a biome?
- An environment
There are many different biomes, but we are going to focus on just 5
different biomes: Tundra, Grasslands, Deciduous Forest, Temperate Rain Forest,
Desert
15 min Development Instruct students to take out their Native American packets and to turn to the
USA map as well as to get some colored pencils or crayons (NO MARKERS)
Color the map based on the biomes (see example)
As you color in each biome, show students images of the biome on the ELMO
Have students flip the page to the biome chart
- Each biome has specific characteristics. In this chart, theres a little bit of
information for each biome.
- Read over chart, draw some pictures
Split the students into groups of four or five
- pass out biome cards
- With the help of your chart and the images, try and figure out which tribe
lived in which biome. Once you agree on what biome the tribe is in, hold up
the card with the name of the biome.
- When all groups have offered an answer, reveal the answer on the next slide.
