ED 345 Calvin College Lesson Planning Form

This lesson plan aims to teach students about the lives of Native Americans who lived in the Great Plains region. The lesson will begin with a review of what students previously learned about Native Americans in other regions. Students will then use a teacher-created website to learn about the Great Plains people by filling out a packet with information. Formative assessment will be done through teacher questions during the activity. Summative assessment will involve students answering two questions on the website. The plan is for students to use computers in the lab to access the site, then return to the classroom to color in a map and discuss what they learned. The teacher reflected that more time is needed, especially for lower readers on the assessment.

Have the students take their packets, a pencil, and a DEAR book and go to
the computer lab.

Have students get started on the website.

Circle around and ask the students what they find interesting. Here are a few
questions ideas:
- Is there anything that is sticking out to you?
- How is the food they eat similar or different to the people that we learned
about last week?
- Why do you think they valued the earth so much?
- Are you able to fill in all of the boxes?
Once the students are finished, they should take the assessment at the end
(google forms submission)
When finished with the assessment, have students read their DEAR books
until others are finished.
Once everyone is finished, have them shut down the computers, push in their
chairs, and line up at the door with their materials.
Once back in the classroom, have the students fill in the map on the front of
their packets (teacher fills in the one on the bulletin board)
Discuss what the students found interesting about the people of the Great
Plains.

Review with the students the questions that historians ask, have a student
come up to the board and write a question on a puzzle piece.
How can using the puzzle pieces help us understand the Native Americans
that we cover better?
Your reflection on the lesson including ideas for improvement for next time:
I was really pleased with how this lesson went. The kids were pretty excited that I created an
entire website for them. I prepped them in the classroom so that they could get started right
away. They worked quietly and loved every part of it. The only struggle they had was with the
summative assessment at the end. There didnt seem to be enough time for the lower readers
to get through and answer the questions as well. We did not have enough time to go through
the map back in the classroom. This will happen during some open time later this week.
Next time I want to make sure that I give them enough time in the computer lab. I would also
like time to debrief. I just need to make sure that I plan enough time for all of these activities.
