    Parameter (total) appears to be the factor differentiating


    solution from insolubility8.
    In Figure C3-1 its clear that when the value of Hildebrand Solubility Parameter is between about 18 and 20
    MPa1/2 the solvent is most effective (red bars) for bitumen,
    and outside that range it is not as effective (green bars).
    Note in Table C3-4 that a wide variety of individual values
    of polar and hydrogen bonding solubility parameters are
    manifested by the 11 solvents which have Hildebrand
    Solubility Parameters in the 18 to 20 MPa1/2 range, and
    values of Solubility Grade 1 for all 15 coded samples of
    bitumen. The reason for this outcome is uncertain. But it
    appears to be the factor that differentiates between those
    that dissolve bitumen well or poorly.
    Nonetheless, Hansen Solubility Parameters are the
    most effective technology for predicting the solubility of

    single or multiple-component soils in solvents. There is


    no second choice. That their prediction of outcomes is
    at least as reliable as most human judgments should
    be taken as a virtue and not a debit. HSP may not be
    legal tender and without aw, but they are the gold
    standard!

    It must be recognized that the author of the reference from which
    these data were taken reaches the opposite conclusion. It would appear
    that his conclusion is based on consideration of only one bitumen code
    (1), and all values of Solubility Grade. The conclusion above is based on
    all 15 coded samples, and only a Solubility Grade of 1.
