Science Fair

The science and technology fair is held each term for students to investigate a topic of their choosing and present their findings. Students are encouraged to brainstorm ideas, develop a question to investigate, and plan experiments to test their hypotheses. They must keep detailed notes in a log book throughout the inquiry process as they research, design experiments, test their ideas through repeated trials, analyze results, and evaluate their findings. Finally, students present their work on a display board including their question, method, results, and conclusions. The fair promotes student inquiry and recognition of their scientific work.

Science and Technology Fair

2010
What is the science and technology fair?

The science and technology fair is held in Term

Two. Every student has a chance to follow an
Inquiry or investigation of their choice to present
at the school science fair in Week 10.

Your project can be an investigation on a question of

your choice designing an experiment or designing an
invention to solve a problem. You can also focus on
computer programming or robotics.
How do I start?
ACCUMULATE
• Brainstorm a list of topics you are interested in
i.e hobbies, sports, science areas. How could
they provide ideas for your project? Read and
browse through
science books, look at what has been done
before. Narrow your choices and develop a
question or model you wish to investigate. Talk
to others and your teacher.
SORT
• Start a log book. Keep note of all your working
along the way – this is the evidence of your
inquiry. Do some background research on your
topic or talk to experts.
• PLAN
• Design your experiment and write an
introduction about what you are doing and an
hypothesis on what you think will happen. Plan
your time line – Week One,
• Remember it will take longer that what you think!
Investigate/Implement
Carry out your experiments or making of your
inventions to trial and test. Write your
method. Modify any designs. Keep full notes
of all your investigations, trials, interviews etc.
Take photos along the way. Make sure you
REPEAT the experiment at least 3 times to
improve the accuracy of your investigation and
make sure it is a FAIR TEST – your teacher
will explain how to do this.
REPORT
Analyse the results of your testing. Consider what
the results tell you and assess the information
gathered. You could use graphs or tables and
written summaries. Write up your results and
observations.

EVALUATE
Compare your results to the hypothesis. Have you
solved the question or made an effective model?
What value are your results? What problems did you
have? What would you do differently? Where to next
with the project? Who would be interested in what
you have found out?
Prepare your presentation.
•Log book
•Display board with all sections as
outlined – see your teacher for
details
•Remember to include photos,
samples, equipment used and make
it visually appealing.
•Technology

•* Ethics Approval

•Prizes!!!

•Good luck and get busy planning and thinking

up your ideas for next term!!
