Integrated Mathematics III Lesson 3.

3 Day 2: Dividing Polynomials

Essential Question: How can you use the factors of a cubic polynomial to solve a division problem involving the
polynomial?
Lesson Objective(s): Students will use long division to divide polynomials by other polynomials.
Students will use synthetic division to divide polynomials by binomials of the form x k.
Students will use the Remainder Theorem.
Previous Learning: Students have previously divided expressions using properties of exponents.
New Vocabulary: polynomial long division, synthetic division
Previous Vocabulary: long division, divisor, quotient, remainder, dividend
Materials for Teacher: none
Materials for Students: none
Pacing: Day 2 45 minutes
INTRODUCTION (5 minutes)

Other Resources

Warm Up
Have students answer Warm Up questions. Review the answers as a class.
Review previously assigned homework, if necessary.

EXAMPLE 2 (12 minutes)

Discuss
Discuss synthetic division with the students.

Discuss synthetic division as a shortcut, and use a completed polynomial long division problem as an example.

Explain and model the steps of synthetic division. Compare the results with the same problem done as long
division so that students see the parallel work and the same numbers.

Circle the coefficients throughout the example.

Lesson Tutorials

Explain to students that the numeric portion is the key part of the problem. Writing variables and exponents is
extraneous. The like terms are aligned for a reason.

It may take several examples for students to understand why synthetic division works.

Lesson Tutorials

In this Core Concept, students learn the Remainder Theorem.

Write the Core Concept.

Be sure that students understand that the Remainder Theorem is only valid for binomial divisors.

Evaluating a Polynomial
In this example, students use synthetic division to evaluate a polynomial.

The remainder in this example adequately demonstrates that it is not a coincidence that the remainder is the value
of the function at x = k.

Have students work in pairs to answer Monitoring Progress Questions 5 and 6.
