TEACHING PHILOSOPHY (SUMMARY)
I believe every person has the ability to find answers from within. This core belief shapes
the three foundations I believe should be a part of all ASL/English Interpreter Education
Programs. The core beliefs are 1) interpreting is much more than the ability to use two
languages fluently, 2) the more engaged interpreters are in seeking solutions and learning, the
more they are able to retain the information gleaned, and 3) interpreters who are civic minded
and believe they are an active part of the community find more success and job fulfillment. I
aim to engage directly with students and provide meaningful, interactive activities that encourage
reflective thinking. Engaged and reflective students will graduate with the ability to search
within themselves to find all the tools and resources they need to be effective ASL/English

interpreters. Also, by providing a learning environment that requires examination of the beliefs
of others, graduates have the skills necessary to become active community member who can
evoke positive relationships between non-deaf and deaf consumers.
