Heart Valves

Systole & Diastole

S1 the first heart sound, reflects closure of the mitral and

tricuspid valves.

S2 the second heart sound, reflects closure of the aortic and

pulmonic valves.

Coronary Arteries

Electrical Events

Cardiac Output

Cardiac output (CO)

The amount of blood pumped out by each ventricle in 1
minute.
Stroke volume (SV)
The volume of blood pumped out by one ventricle with each
beat.

Heart rate (HR)

Counting Cardiac
output (CO)
Normal resting Heart Rate (75 beats/min)
Stroke volume (70 ml/beat)
CO = HR x
SV

Cardiac reserve
The difference between resting and maximal CO.

End diastolic volume (EDV)

The amount of blood that collects in a ventricle during
diastole.
End systolic volume (ESV)
The volume of blood remaining in a ventricle after it has
contracted.

Preload
The degree to which cardiac muscle cells are stretched just
before they contract.
Afterload
The pressure that the ventricles must overcome to eject
blood.

Contractility
The contractile strength achieved at a given muscle length.
