Direct Instruction Model

The Direct Instruction Model uses teacher demonstration and explanation combined with student practice and feedback to help students acquire well-defined knowledge and skills needed for later learning. It consists of 4 phases: (1) introduction and review of prior knowledge, (2) presentation of new skills with examples, (3) guided student practice with teacher guidance, and (4) independent student practice. Research shows it is effective for low achievers and students with exceptionalities.
