Algebra Chapter 9 Study Guide

9-1: Graphing Quadratic Functions

*Key ideas:
-Standard form of a quadratic:
-Identify the axis of symmetry
-Find the vertex of the parabola
-Identify the vertex as a maximum or minimum

*Axis of symmetry:

*Use the x-value of the axis of symmetry and the equation to find the y-value
of the vertex.
*If “a” is positive, then the vertex is a MINIMUM.
If “a” is negative, then the vertex is a MAXIMUM.

9-2: Solving Quadratic Equations by Graphing

*Key ideas:
-If we set the equation equal to zero and graph it, we can find the
“roots” of the equation by find the x-intercepts.
-If the graph crosses the x-axis twice, there are 2 solutions.
-If the graph crosses the x-axis once, there is 1 solution.
-If the graph does not cross the x-axis, there is no solution.

9-3: Solving Equations by Completing the Square

*Key ideas:
-Recall that a perfect square trinomials factor like this:

Or

-We can turn any quadratic into a perfect square trinomial by

“completing the square.”
-Eliminate the “c” term and add the value that makes the
trinomial a perfect square.
-Factor the perfect square trinomial and solve by using the square
root.
9-4: Solving Quadratic Equations Using the Quadratic Formula
*Key ideas:
-If you have a quadratic in the form: then the
solutions can be found with the formula:

is called the discriminant and if it is:

Negative = NO SOLUTION
Zero = ONE SOLUTION
Positive = TWO SOLUTIONS
9-5: Exponential Functions
*Key ideas:
-Standard form is:
-The y-intercept of these functions will always be (0,1)
-If , it is an exponential growth
-If , it is an exponential decay
-If you have: , you shift the graph up or down
-If you have: , you shift the graph left or right

9-6: Exponential Growth and Decay

*Key ideas:
-Growth formula is:
-Decay formula is:
