This SIOP lesson reflection summarizes a lesson on literary devices. The objectives were for the student, Tara, to define devices, identify them in a song, and write a paragraph using each. Tara achieved the objectives with minimal help. Initially, the song was challenging but Tara understood the devices with aid. More practice identifying devices would have helped. The fairytale writing worked well and showed Tara's mastery. For an ELL student, the lesson would require more visuals, examples done together, and independent practice to ensure comprehension.

Our objectives for the lesson were for Tara to be able to define the literary devices discussed in class from the PowerPoint, identify the literary devices in the Echosmith Bright song, and construct a short paragraph utilizing each literary device discussed at least once, from the perspective of a fairytale character of her choice. We were able to achieve each of our objectives in the lesson. Tara showed her understanding of the material after she identified each literary device from the Echosmith Bright song with minimal aid. She also got a 100% on the Kahoot quiz where she had to identify the literary device from the example provided. Tara was also able to successfully construct a paragraph utilizing each device perfectly. We did challenge Tara in terms of her vocabulary/language development. Even though she was familiar with the literary devices, she had not fully learned them. At first, she had some difficulty identifying the devices in the Echosmith song, but with aid and time she was able to understand each device. By the time she took the Kahoot quiz and wrote the paragraph, she had fully comprehended each literary device and needed minimal aid. At first, I was worried that the Echosmith song might have been too much of a challenge for her to identify the literary devices. However, she was able to get through the song and identify the devices with some help from us. I think we should have had more

Kahoot questions for her to identify the different literary devices in
order for her to receive more practice with the terms, or had her do more simple practice before the Echosmith song. If we were to do this lesson again, we would give her more practice exercises before doing the Echosmith song. We would also add more questions to the Kahoot to ensure that she understood the literary devices. The fairytale prompt paragraph worked well in the lesson and she seemed to really have fun with it. She also demonstrated how she mastered the content by her wonderful utilization of the literary devices in her sentences. If we were to do this lesson with an ELL student, we would have to add more visuals of the literary devices and more examples. We would most likely show a visual and then with the student compose a sentence using the specific literary device. The lesson would also probably take longer. We would also add more visual images to the Kahoot, which is something we could have done for Tara, as well. Overall, we would have to do more examples of each device together and then provide more independent work to ensure that the ELL student comprehended the material. However, the Echosmith song, the Kahoot, and the fairytale prompt will all provide us with information as to whether or not the student is comprehending the material.
