Big Ideas:
What was the role of Nationalism, Imperialism, Alliances, and Militarism in the outbreak of war?
How did the war give rise to Totalitarian regimes?
Unit Goals and Objectives:

Students will be able to identify the members of the major alliance systems (for example Triple Entente and the Central
Powers). They will understand the role of the alliances in the escalation of war.
Students will understand how pre-war political and social ideology contributed to the conflict. Students will be able to
identify how militarism and the accompanying arms race propelled major powers into conflict.
Students will be able to describe the events that brought America into the conflict.
Students will lean about the effects of the war and be able to expalin European disillusionment with capitalism and how it
gave rise of Totalitarianism.
Students will learn to use the web to conduct research and complete assignments.
Students will interact with one another and the instructor to promote collaborative learning
Through the activities students will gain an understanding of the emotional and social consequences of the conflict.

Unit Summary:
In this unit students will examine the causes, consequences, and legacies of the First World War. Students will learn the motives
and arguments of the various nation states and their leaders for entering the war. In addition, they will study the military and
political alliances that formed as a result of the conflict. They will gain an understanding of military tactics, key geographic
locations, and major turning points in the war. In addition to examining the conflict, students will also review the peace process
and the social and political implications. Finally students will examine the rise of totalitarian governments in the aftermath of
the war. This unit provides students with a broad overview of the war from the beginning to the end.

Students will also complete an interactive map assignment in
teams of four. There is a flashcard assignment for the
purpose of identifying important world leaders.
