Key Components For A Workstation To Connect To A Network P3 Unit 9

To access a network and its resources, a workstation must first be connected to a network server via a wired local area network connection using coaxial cable, fiber optic cable, or twisted pair wiring. Key network devices that allow for proper network functioning include routers to transmit and receive data packets and set up a local area network; hubs to connect Ethernet cables from multiple devices; and wireless access points to allow wireless data transfer between devices or to a wired network. Other important network devices are bridges to reduce traffic between network segments, gateways to translate between different network data formats, modems to link a home network to the Internet, and switches to join multiple computers within a local area network.

Key Components for a

Workstation to Connect to a
Network P.3
For a network client to be able to access a network and network resources, the
workstation must first be connected to the network server via wired means
(coaxial, fibre optic, twisted pair) within a LAN. Network devices are essential for
a network to work properly, network devices may include:

Routers: A type of network device that may be wired or wireless. This is

used to transmit and receive data packets and can set up a LAN.
Routers forward data packets to their destination using the fastest available path.

Hub: A hub is used in a wired network to connect Ethernet cables from a

number of devices together. The hub allows each device to talk to the
others. Hubs arent used in networks with only wireless connections, since
network devices such as routers and adapters communicate directly with
one another.
Wireless access Point: A wireless access point is a central communications
device that allows computers and devices to transfer data wirelessly
among them or to transfer data wirelessly to a wired network.
Bridge: A bridge reads the outermost section of data on the data packet,
to tell where the message is going. It reduces the traffic on other network
segments, since it does not send all packets.
Gateways: A gateway can translate information between different network
data formats or network architectures. It can translate TCP/IP to AppleTalk
so computers supporting TCP/IP can communicate with Apple brand
computers.
Modem: A modem links your home network to the Internet through
your Internet Service Provider the high speed types of data outside of your
home arent suitable for your direct use, so modems convert the data into
digital Ethernet, which all the network equipment in your home can use.
Switch: A switch or network switch is a small hardware device that joins multiple
computers together within one Local Area Network (LAN). Technically, network
switches operate at layer two of the OSI Model.

Interconnection devices include: a repeater that stores data and collision signals;
a hub that is a multiport repeater; a bridge which is a data link device that
connects collision domains; a router which is a network layer device; and a
switch which is a multi-port device that has parallel lines.
