Reflections:
M: Before our trip to Bronzeville, living on the northside I never
really heard of this part of Chicago, so I didnt know what to expect
on this trip. The overall trip was quite fun, but, the travel time was
not as exciting. This experience was eye-opening by seeing a new
part of Chicago, meeting new people, and eating somewhere new.
The best part of our trip was our meal at Chicagos Home of
Chicken and Waffles, a restaurant that definitely held some ties to
southern life. It had great dishes for an awesome price. We walked
through the neighborhood of Bronzeville, as well as around the
Illinois Institute of Technology Campus, which was quite modern
and spacious. It also linked to one of my history classes I am in at
the moment, that gave ITTs campus as an example of one of the
different types of art that became present during the 20th century.
It was a fun experience, however, not one of my favorite parts of
Chicago, nor was it an authentic Chicago experience. There was a
lack of restaurants and activities to engage in (ex/ shopping,
bowling, etc.)
P: Despite travelling to the city every now and
then with friends to hang out I had never been
to or heard of this area. I found this trip
interesting because we all got to experience a
new part of the city we otherwise would not
have gotten the chance to explore. The area
around Bronzeville has a lot of small
apartments, local schools, some parks, Illinois
Tech. and a few scattered restaurants. We ate
at Chicagos Home of Chicken and Waffles. The
food had a southern flare, which was new to me
but it was all delicious. I ate chicken, collard
greens, mac n cheese, mashed potatoes and
corn bread. As the night winded down we took
the bus back to the L station before it got too
cold, but we all wished we could have stayed
longer to see more of the area. All I can say is

T: My group members and I all agreed on not knowing exactly what to expect.
Im not from Chicago, so I dont really know any of the areas really well and
when I heard Bronzeville I didnt know how to feel about going there. I enjoyed
the trip because I got to know a little bit more about Marrin and Pat. We talked
about our experiences growing up (theirs in Chicago, mine in Brooklyn) and ate
at Chicagos Home of Chicken and Waffles. I mostly enjoyed the trip because I
was with two other great people, but I did not enjoy the struggle of going so far
south for us not to really see anything in particular.
