Transformations Project

The document defines and provides examples of different types of geometric transformations including translation, reflection, and rotation. Translation moves a shape to a new location without changing its appearance. Reflection creates a mirror image of a shape across a line. Rotation turns a shape around a fixed point. Examples and interactive links are given to illustrate each type of transformation.

8th Grade TEKS

111.28. Grade 8, Adopted 2012.
(b) Knowledge and skills.
(10) Two-dimensional shapes. The student applies
mathematical process standards to develop transformational
geometry concepts. The student is expected to:

(A) generalize the properties of orientation and congruence

of rotations, reflections, translations, and dilations of twodimensional shapes on a coordinate plane;

(B) differentiate between transformations that preserve

congruence and those that do not;

What is a transformation?

Transformation is the moving of

objects. The types of
transformation include
translation, reflection, and
rotation.

Example:

The original shape (in red)

is transformed by moving
from its original spot on
the coordinate plane to the
new location (in blue). This
type of transformation is a
translation.

Translation
A translation moves an object from
one spot to another; the object
moves in a straight line.

Example:

Reflection
In a reflection, an object creates a
mirror image of itself over a line.

Rotation
In this transformation, a figure is
moved about a point.
