Syllabus For Final Project

This document provides information on a five-day, 25-hour professional development course on incorporating flipped classroom techniques. The course will involve hands-on project-based learning where teachers create model lessons using the taught technologies. Initial technology surveys identified goals of improving engagement through inquiry-based learning, creating instructional videos for home learning, and using software like Google Apps for Education to assess lectures. Objectives include using technology for workstations, iPads, and video recording to flip classrooms, creating review videos, and using Google Classroom and Forms for homework. Workshop topics will cover designing project-based learning, using tools like PowToon and ThingLink to simplify complex concepts, creating review videos, and using surveys and Google Form

Professional Development Elements of a Flipped Classroom

Course Description:
This is a five day, 25 hour presentation series where teachers have the ability to actively
create their own model lesson in the workshop using the technology being taught. In
my experience, and according to best practices for designing PD for adults, the
problems must be realistic- and to this extent ,the students must know the need to
incorporate technology. I have accomplished this by directly using their responses to my
surveys to create the lessons. I will give adequate guidance, and allow them time to use

the manipulative provided. The amount of guidance given will be based both on the
initial surveys, and the exit surveys for the future classes.
These classes will therefore centralize around project based learning
strategies. In my experience as a teacher, and as a student, this format has
demonstrated that the subject matter is understood and retained more through handson learning. Students are more engaged with the subject matter through project-based
learning. Additionally, by taking charge of their own projects, presenting their findings in
front of the class, or industry leaders, they become groomed for the workforce. Lastly, all
lectures have followup assignments that can be completed and reviewed as a courtesy
for those interested in practicing what they have learned. Lectures will be available for
review offline as well.

Course Goals:
The initial technology survey responses have allowed us to identify and prioritize several goals for
the professional development. These objectives are global and center around the creation of
problem based learning in our classrooms. This instruction will fit well in a flipped classroom,
and will often benefit from the use of new technology. The classes have been designed to highlight
problems brought to light on the surveys, and work to find solutions within the means of each
school.

Course Objectives:

Objectives addressed in this series:

Survey results indicate the need to focus on these problem based learning objectives:
1. (IBL) To improve classroom behavior through increased engagement teachers will discover
and discuss the available technology to be used (inquiry based learning) which includes
workstations, iPads, video recording to implement a flipped classroom approach to their
subject areas.
2. Using IBL, the attendee will be able to create an instructional video that may be viewed at
home, so that they can provide higher order learning activities at school to compliment the
home learning experience.
3. After assessment of available tools, teacher will discover and learn software to creating
implement a flipped classroom approach to their subject areas. While discover and discuss
(IBL model) available software (GAFE) to objectively measure the outcome of a classroom
lecture or presentation in order to improve teaching strategies.

4.

Through authentic experiences, and a driving need of catering to the over and under achiever
in the classroom, find an teach a delivery method for the student centered classroom through
scaolding.

5. The use of Google Classroom and forms to complete homework assignments that are time
and date stamped. Also allows for saving class time from checking for completion
6. Teachers will be suciently able to make a digital lesson with any appropriate tool; emphasize
instruction on overviews via VoiceThread prior to classroom instruction- and how to create of
powerful review videos to send out before a test.
