Hitec University Taxila Cantt: Engineering Mechanics (Lab)

1. The document describes an experiment to verify Hooke's law for a spring under extension. Hooke's law states that the force applied to a spring is directly proportional to the displacement from its equilibrium position. 2. The experiment involves measuring the extension of a spring when different weights are added, calculating the spring constant k, and plotting a graph of force versus extension. 3. The results show a straight line graph, verifying Hooke's law, though the line is slightly deflected possibly due to non-ideal conditions or apparatus errors. Extension springs are commonly used in automotive and machinery applications.

EXPERIMENT # 02

14-ME-019

Objective:
Verification of Hookes law for spring under extension.

Apparatus:
Extension spring apparatus.

Diagram:

Explanation:
Spring:
The device used to store mechanical energy. It is mostly
made of mild steel.
The spring is used in our practical life in many branches. The
applications are discussed below.
Types:
o Tension Spring
o Extension spring
Stress:
The internal force which is applied by the object in resistance
to the external force applied on that object.
Strain:

EXPERIMENT # 02

The Deformation appears in the object on which the fore is

applied.

Hookes law states that:

For relatively smaller deformations of body, the size of
deformation is directly proportional to the deforming force applied.
Mathematically:
Fx
Or

F = - kx

The negative sign indicates the direction of the restoring force F

is always opposite to the direction of the compression Y and the
proportionality constant k. The behavior is shown by a straight line of
graph between Force and Compression.
Spring Constant (k) :
k is known spring constant.
Its Value is dependent on:

Material
Physical Condition
Dimension
Shape
Others..

Procedure:

1.

I calibrated the spring extension apparatus to remove any

error.
2. I made a reference point to note the reading.
3. Then I add weight and noted the extension.
4. Then I go on adding weight and noted the distance of
extension.
5. After taking 6 reading I removed the weight and noted the
reading.
6. I repeated this step until all the weight is removed.
7. After noting the reading I find the mean of loading and
unloading extension.
8. Then I calculated the value of constant k.

9. After calculating k I plotted a graph between Force and

Extension.

Conclusion:
The straight line obtained in graph shows the verification of
Hooks Law. The line is slightly deflected due to some reasons i.e.
i. Non-Ideal Conditions
ii. Apparatus Errors

Applications:

Extension springs are used in:

Automotive interiors and exteriors.
Door assemblies.
Carburetors.
Trampolines.
Machinery.
