Increasing Decreasing Functions

This document discusses increasing and decreasing functions and how to determine if a function is increasing or decreasing based on its derivative. It provides definitions of increasing and decreasing functions and explains that a function is increasing where its derivative is positive and decreasing where its derivative is negative. It demonstrates how to apply the derivative test to determine intervals of increase/decrease for various functions by finding critical points where the derivative is zero or undefined and evaluating the derivative between them.

Applying Derivative Test

Given a function f(x)
Determine the derivative f '(x)
Find critical points
Where f '(x) = 0 or f '(x) does not exist

Evaluate derivative between or on either

Critical Numbers
The critical numbers for a function f are
those numbers c in the domain of f for which
f (c ) = 0 or f(c ) does not exist.
A critical point is a point whose xcoordinate is the critical number c, and
whose y-coordinate is f ( c).
