Stan asked Lee if Chinese people could afford his product, which offended Lee due to differences in body language, psychology, and economics between Western and Chinese culture. Specifically, English proficiency, views on finances, and what is considered inappropriate differed. To avoid miscommunication, one must understand cultural differences and respect the other party's perspective when communicating.

HOW CULTURE DIFFERENCE CAN LEAD TO MISCOMMUNICATION

Business and Electronic Communication

The situation given clearly indicates that how difference in culture can create a gap between an
effective business communications.
The culture differences that were highlighted in the paragraph are:
1) Language difference: After reading, what I felt is that, although Stan and Tung-Sen Lee
are communicating in English, i feel that what level of understanding Stan has can be
totally different from what Lees level of understanding has of the same context.
2) Body language difference: As soon as Stan asked if Chinese people could afford his
product there was a moment of silence from Lee, which depicts that Lee felt a bit
offended to his statement where as in US or UK, if you ask them the same question, they
will give you the answer you need.
3) Psychology difference: Persons state of mind matters because the culture where you
live in tailors your cognition and action. Also, in a culture where Lee is brought up is
totally different from where Stan is brought up. Lee must have taken his statement as an
insult and thought it was inappropriate to ask such questions where as in a culture where
Stan is brought up its not considered inappropriate rather it is taken as a fair question to
ask when it comes to a fair business dealing.
4) Economic difference: Although Stan and Lee belong to a developed country but due
difference in the culture they are both brought up to, they take their finances differently.
Lee is from China and Chinese people are very thoughtful about their finances as
compare to what people from US or UK think.
Conclusion:
The things that one should keep in mind before making any business dealing with any foreign
company is that one should understand the culture difference between them. Its important to
keep in mind the things that can either make the other party feel offended or pleased. One should
respect from where the other person is coming from and try to communicate his or her thoughts
well to others.
