Cognitive Radio: A Survey: Presented By: Arpita Jaitawat

This document discusses cognitive radio, which is an intelligent radio technology that can detect available channels in a wireless spectrum and change transmission parameters to allow more concurrent communications. It outlines the need for cognitive radio due to increasing spectrum congestion and limited licensed access. The key features of cognitive radio are described as spectrum sensing, management, mobility, and sharing. Challenges of cognitive radio include hardware requirements, detecting hidden primary users, and dealing with spread spectrum users. Potential future solutions involve using high-processing hardware, cooperative spectrum sensing, and encryption techniques.

Need of Cognitive System

With the increase in the transition from voice only communication to media
type communication, the need of higher data rates is increasing.
Radio spectrum is a scarce and precious natural resource, the use of which by
transmitters and receivers is licensed by governments.
The main reason is limited access to licensed band for large number of users.

Cognitive Radio
Definition adopted by Federal Communication Commission (FCC):
Cognitive Radio (CR) is an adaptive, intelligent radio and
network technology that can automatically detect available
channels in a wireless spectrum and change transmission
parameters enabling more communications to run concurrently
and also improve radio operating behavior.
Cognitive radio is a software defined radio that detects for available licensed
bands and opportunistically allows unlicensed users to use free licensed band.

Future Solutions

High processing units such as DSP and FPGA can be used to overcome the
hardware requirement problem.

Cooperative Spectrum Sensing is used to avoid hidden primary user problem.

Spread spectrum problem can be partially avoided if hopping pattern is perfectly
known and perfect synchronization with the signal can be achieved.
OFDM based approach can be used.
Various decision fusion rules are used at the fusion center.
