Lab Report: CLD 20502 Basic Engineering Workshop

This lab report summarizes an experiment on machining turning. The introduction explains that turning involves using a single-edge cutting tool to remove material from a rotating workpiece and generate a cylindrical shape. The lathe provides power to rotate the workpiece and feed the tool at a specified rate to cut the workpiece to the necessary depth. Other turning operations that can be done on a lathe include facing, taper turning, contour turning, and chamfering.

Title :
Labwork 5: Machining Turning
Introduction/ objective :
Introduction
Machining is a manufacturing process in a sharp cutting tool is used to cut away material to leave
the desired part shape. It involve the shear deformation of the work material to form a chip, as the
chip removed, a new surface is exposed. To perform the operation, relative motion is required
between the tool and the work. Turning is a cutting tool with a single cutting edge is used to
remove material from a rotating workpiece to generate cylindrical shape. It is conventional
machining. The speed motion in turning is by rotating the workpart. The feed motion is achieved
by the cutting tool moving slowly in a direction parallel to the axis of rotation of the workpiece.
The lathe provides the power to rotate the workpiece, feed the tool at the specified rate and cut the
workpiece at the necessary depth. Other operations related to turning that can be accomplished by
using a lathe include facing, taper turning, contour turning, and chamfering. Facing is the tool is fed
radially into the rotating workpiece to create a new surface (face) on the end. Taper turning is the
too is fed at an angle to the axis of rotation to create a conical geometry. While contour turning is
the tool follows a contour that is other that straight, thus creating a contoured form in the turned
part. Chamfering is the cutting tool cuts an angle on the corner of the cylinder. A very small 1
chamfer can be used to remove burrs usually formed during machining processes and to eliminate
sharp corners (for safety reasons).
