MEDIA THEORIES

Lauren Stocks

Gatekeeping
Definition the selection and rejection of information for
inclusion of the text
We will be using the gatekeeping method when creating our documentary
so that we, as a group, are able to edit the information/ video
recordings to produce the best documentary we can. We will make sure
to obtain our objective and try not to influence our target audience so
that we dont become biased. This is also because we decided to use
Levi-Strauss's theory where we present both sides of opinion. We will
edit scenes because when we record, there will be parts that need to be
cut out and edited because there may be irrelevant information. By
choosing the specific people we use and the location of filming, the
information we gain from our research will be implemented throughout
the documentary so that we can create a certain type of representation
for the documentary to be successful. By choosing specific locations,
information, pictures and individuals to participate in our documentary,
this will help us to use the parts that are best suited to our objective
which will also be shown throughout our coursework.

Construction of reality
Definition - by editing & gatekeeping, media
producers construct an artificial picture of reality.
By editing and gatekeeping our documentary we will be able to
produce an artificial picture because the videos will be
natural and not staged so the participants will be giving their
own opinion and not something previously practiced/
scripted. We will need to construct it to our point of view, so
to do this we will edit and control parts of the filming that we
think will best suit the final outcome. This is so that our
documentary gets straight to the point and doesnt jabber
about irrelevant information or information that isnt as
important as others. Also as we are teenagers ourselves itll
mean that we will know more in terms of our generation as
we all use phones and know the impacts and biased opinions
people can have.

Mediation
Definition changing something before it gets to the audience
Mediation will be used in our documentary so that it will be created to
a high standard by checking sound levels, editing skills and so on.
Mediation will be our final step before we show it to our targeted
audience to make sure that we have all the information in the
documentary that we wanted. This is a vital step because this will
enable us to all see whether our documentary creation is
appropriate and targets our audience in the way that we want it
too. It also means that we need to be critical of our documentary
and edit anything we think isnt right or could change so it has
improved.
