Draft 1

The document discusses the issue of transitioning blind students from high school to post-secondary education. It notes that while some think technology is making this easier, protests show electronic textbooks are still inaccessible. Less than 14% of blind people graduate with a bachelor's degree. The best way to help is by funding existing organizations like NABS and EYE that support blind students and encourage them academically. This will help more blind students pursue education beyond high school.

Introduction! !

Throughout the world there are problems. These problems can be quite significant or rather
insignificant and generally one will be viewed differently from one person than it will another.
The view that people have on these problems and the actions they take to resolve them stems
from their passion for the issue at hand. This passion can start out small, in just a small
community, but can experience astronomical effects if given the proper care. As stated before
the problems and the passions can differ so greatly from person to person and often its hard to
focus on just one at a time. However, one must be focused on it in order to resolve it because
no issue can be cured half-heartedly. !
Problem/Task!!
The issue I intend to focus on is the transition of blind students from the high school level to the
post-secondary education level (community college, university etc.) It is viewed by some that
this particular issue is going away with the new technological advances giving more accessible
means to blind students and allowing them to pursue their academic goals. However, this
couldnt be farther from the truth. In fact a protest was held on August 26th to protest Amazon
becoming the primary provider of electronic textbooks because the e-books are not accessible
to blind individuals. This is an issue because more than 30% of blind students have less than a
high school education and roughly the same amount only have up to a high school education
(Blindness.) This is a significant issue because less than 14% of blind individuals get as high as
a bachelors degree. So the problem is keeping students who are blind or visually impaired in
high school and giving them the tools to move from high school to college. !
Course of Action!
!
The course of action is not a strenuous one. There are several organization already present that
address this issue and try to bring together blind students in order to encourage them in their
academic pursuits. These organization include National Association of Blind Students (NABS
and its respected state affiliates) and the Envisioning Youth Empowerment Retreat (EYE.)
These organization have recorded success in bringing together students who are blind and
visually impaired and because of this the best way to help them with their goal is to fund them.
There are over 60,000 blind students in the U.S and reaching out to all of these is extremely
expensive so the best form of helping these organizations and the blind community is to provide
them with the funds they need.!
Feasibility and Goals!
!
The feasibility and goals of this project are more than acceptable because of the simplicity of
just giving funds to organization that already exist rather than kick-starting a campaign for an
existing issue. Very little planning has to be done apart from how much should be given and
how many organizations should receive a portion of the money. Also, it would be advantageous
to know what the organization have in mind for the funds provided. As for the goals they will be
accomplished via proxy through the funding of these organization (NABS, EYE etc.) These
goals being that students who are blind or visually impaired would stand a greater chance of
going to post-secondary education and/or pursuing education beyond what they normally would
have without the skills and networking of student organizations for the blind/visually impaired.!
Conclusion!
!
In conclusion it is evident that children with visual impairments are gaining a foothold in
the academic field due to the dedication of certain organization and this support should
continue. However, for this support to continue support must be given to these organization both
from students themselves and outside contributors such as blind/visually impaired alumni or the
sighted community. Through donations of funds to these organization students with visual
impairments will be able to continue their pursuits in academics and in a sense pay-it-forward
for the next generation of students through their knowledge and experience.!
